1. ロケーション：海と山に挟まれた劇的な海岸線

〈Zig Zag Resort〉は、アルバニア南部の沿岸地域、ヒマラに位置する。敷地はイオニア海の海岸線における劇的な区間にあり、海と険しい山岳地形の間に挟まれている。手つかずの自然美で知られるヒマラは、直接海に面し、アルバニア・リビエラを広く見渡すパノラマビューを提供する。

2. コンテクスト：急峻な地形と原生植生への適応

敷地は急勾配の斜面、層状に重なる岩盤、そして原生植生によって構成されている。地形は起伏が激しく、最小限の介入と慎重な適応が求められる環境である。

リゾート内の移動はケーブルカーを中心に、追加の降車ポイントと歩行者用通路で構成されている。既存の植生と岩盤は可能な限り保存され、空間構造の不可欠な要素を形成している。

3. インスピレーション：大地のリズムに呼応する「ジグザグ」の幾何学

本プロジェクトは、景観が有する幾何学から直接的な着想を得ている。「ジグザグ」形状は敷地の自然な傾斜と方位に対する応答であり、土地のリズムに沿った層状のボリューム配置を可能にする。

人工的な造形を押し付けることを避け、地形そのものが建築言語を定義する設計となっている。その階段状の構成は、尾根から海岸線へと続く連続的な流れを反映している。

4. プログラム：斜面全体を活用した機能分散と垂直動線

〈Zig Zag Resort〉は、複数の標高レベルに分散配置された総合的なホスピタリティプログラムを提供する。これには標準客室とスイートを備えたホテル、ウェルネス＆スパエリア、レストラン、パノラマテラス、海水インフィニティプール、そして造園された庭園が含まれる。

主要機能は斜面の両端（上層にレストラン、下層にプール）に配置されており、これにより敷地全体を通じた垂直方向の移動と交流が促進される。ケーブルカーが全レベルを接続し、歩行者通路と乗降ゾーンがこれを補完する計画である。プログラムの配置は、地形を越えた視覚的・空間的な連続性を維持しつつ、パブリックエリアとプライベートエリアを明確に分離している。

5. コンセプト：地形に溶け込む層状の構成

建築コンセプトの基盤にあるのは、自然の傾斜への適応である。ジグザグ形状は地形に追従し、敷地の標高に応じて階段状に下降していく。駐車場や設備機能を地下に収めるために最小限の掘削は必要であったものの、この戦略によって主要なボリュームは軽やかさを保ち、もち上げられ、景観と一体化することが可能となった。

屋根とテラスは地形の等高レベルに合わせて配置され、周囲へと続く連続的なランドスケープを実現している。また、建物の配置方位は、日照、日陰、そして海の眺望に対して最適化されている。その結果、自然環境との視覚的・空間的なつながりを保ち続ける、層状の構成が生まれたのである。

ZIG ZAG RESORT ARCHITECTURE SHAPED BY THE LAND

1_LOCATION

Zig Zag Resort is located in Himarë, a coastal area in southern Albania. The site sits on a dramatic stretch of the Ionian coastline, between the sea and steep mountainous terrain. Known for its raw natural beauty, Himarë offers direct sea access and wide panoramic views across the Albanian Riviera.

2_CONTEXT

The site consists of steep slopes, layered rock formations, and native vegetation. The terrain is strongly contoured, requiring minimal intervention and careful adaptation. Circulation across the resort is organized through the funicular, with additional drop-off points and pedestrian paths. Existing vegetation and rock formations are preserved wherever possible, forming an integral part of the spatial structure.

3_INSPIRATION

The project takes direct inspiration from the geometry of the landscape. The zig-zag form is a response to the site’s natural slope and orientation, enabling layered volumes that follow the land’s rhythm. The design avoids artificial imposition and instead lets the terrain define the architectural language. The stepped composition reflects a continuous flow from ridge to coastline.

4_PROGRAM

Zig Zag Resort offers a full hospitality program distributed across multiple elevation levels. It includes a hotel with standard rooms and suites, wellness and spa areas, restaurants, panoramic terraces, a seawater infinity pool, and landscaped gardens. Key functions are located at opposite ends of the slope — with the restaurant at the upper level and the pool at the bottom — encouraging vertical movement and interaction throughout the site. The funicular connects all levels, supported by pedestrian paths and drop-off zones. The program layout separates public and private areas while maintaining visual and spatial continuity across the terrain.

5_CONCEPT

The architectural concept is based on adapting to the natural slope. The zig-zag form follows the terrain, stepping down in response to the site’s elevation. While minimal excavation was necessary to place parking and services underground, this strategy allows the main volumes to remain light, elevated, and integrated into the landscape. Roofs and terraces are aligned with topographic levels to allow a continuous landscape to its surroundings and building orientation is optimized for sunlight, shade, and sea views. The result is a layered configuration that maintains a visual and spatial connection with the natural setting.

Physical Model

The model demonstrates how the resort follows the natural slope of the site. Building volumes are positioned in a zig-zag sequence that steps down the hill, minimizing land disruption. The physical model highlights the spatial relationship between architecture and terrain, and the gradual descent toward the coastline.

Framing Nature

A natural cave becomes the main feature of the coastal lounge. The architecture follows the rock formation, preserving its texture and creating a shaded, panoramic retreat. Guests enjoy uninterrupted sea views from a space that blurs the line between built form and raw landscape. Materials, lighting, and furniture are chosen to complement the geology and emphasize the immersive experience.
