計画地は長崎県・島原半島の一角にある。半島の中心にある雲仙普賢岳から放射状にのびる山と谷が敷地付近で連続しており、その山側に位置する平坦な敷地であった。この敷地の履歴を調べると、1980年代ごろまではこの小山のような形状を活かした果樹の段々畑が形成されていた。やがて1990年代以降に尾根に沿って道路が敷設され、そこに接道する形で平らな地面となるよう盛土され、現在の状態にいたったようである。敷地そのものは平坦ではあるものの、少し広域でみるとなだらかな斜面地の一角に位置していることを日々の往来で体感するのである。本来の斜面と、そこに誰かが後から平らに盛った土。そこから人がこの地に住まうことを考えられないだろうか。
この住宅は、山から海に向かって土に沈んでいくような形をしている。かつての果樹畑だった頃の斜面に沿うように、つまり現在の道路とほぼ同じ傾きで断面を決定した結果である。土に沈んでいった海側の室内は盛土に包まれた半地下状の構成となり、動物が棲む穴ぐらのような眠る場所となっている。一方、山側は雲仙普賢岳に向かって登っていき、土から開放された明るい場所となり、目下に広がる諫早湾や多良山系を望むことができる。ここを家族が憩うような場とした。本来の斜面から生まれるアクティビティを日々の暮らしの中で感じながら、後から盛られた土とも共存していくような住まいである。
構造は木造平屋建てである。長手の平面基準を2,275mmスパン、屋根梁や壁・天井・スラスト止めを910mmスパンとし、崖側の開口部はすべて同幅で高さを200mmずつ変化させている。それらが住まい全体をとおして一定のリズムを与えることで、本来の斜面の変異と体験が際立つような計画とした。近年の工事費高騰を受けて、各材料の歩留まりを尺寸法で追求した結果でもある。また地質調査を行ったところ、かつての斜面に沿って支持地盤があることが分かった。基礎もこの傾きに沿うように掘り下げ、支持地盤と基礎を近接させることで基礎計画の最適化を図っている。

A House Where Slopes Tell the Land's Story
The site is located on the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture. Mountains and valleys radiating out from Mount Unzen-Fugen at the peninsula’s center extend continuously near the site, which was a flat plot situated on the mountainside. Research into the site’s history reveals that, until around the 1980s, terraced orchards were formed here on this small hill-like topography. Later, starting in the 1990s, a road was constructed along the ridge. The site was then filled to create a flat surface adjacent to this road, resulting in its current state. While the site itself is flat, daily movement around the area makes one keenly aware that it sits at the corner of a gently sloping terrain. The original slope was later filled in by someone to make it flat. Couldn’t one imagine people living here?
This house is shaped as if sinking into the earth from the mountains toward the sea. This form resulted from defining the cross-section along the slope of what was once an orchard, meaning it follows nearly the same incline as the current road. The seaward rooms, sinking into the earth, form a semi-basement structure embraced by the embankment, creating sleeping spaces reminiscent of animal burrows. Conversely, the mountainside ascends toward Mount Unzen-Fugen, creating a bright space liberated from the earth. Here, one can overlook Isahaya Bay and the Tarayama mountain range below. This area was designed for the family to relax. It is a home that allows residents to feel the activities born from the original slope in their daily lives while coexisting with the later-added earth.
The structure is a single-story wooden building. The longitudinal plan grid is set at 2,275mm spans, while roof beams, walls, ceilings, and thrust stops are at 910mm spans. All openings on the cliff side share the same width, varying in height by 200mm each. This consistent rhythm throughout the dwelling accentuates the inherent variation and experience of the original slope. This design also resulted from pursuing material efficiency through dimensional standards in response to recent increases in construction costs. Geological surveys revealed supporting bedrock along the original slope. The foundation was excavated to follow this incline, optimizing the foundation plan by placing it close to the supporting bedrock.
