カナダ・ブリティッシュコロンビア州ビクトリアに建つ〈Aerth Saunas〉は、まちの中心部の狭い路地に誕生したサウナ施設です。

ブダペストを拠点とする建築スタジオ Hello Woodが手がけたこのプロジェクトは、都市の隙間に「落ち葉」から着想を得た有機的な曲線をもつ木造キャビン群が配置された空間となっています。

路地にたたずむ隠れ家のようなオアシス

Hello Woodにとって、カナダは決して馴染みのない土地ではない。2016年、ブダペストを拠点とするこのスタジオは、1956年の革命後にカナダへ逃れたハンガリー人移民を称えるため、トロントに木製のインスタレーションを建設した。

〈Aerth Saunas〉は彼らにとって重要な新たな章の始まりを告げるものであり、Hello Woodにとってカナダでの初めての建築プロジェクトとなる。

このアイデアは、ブリティッシュコロンビア州ビクトリア在住のハンガリー系起業家であり、Ærthの創設者であるヴィクトリア（Viktória）によって生み出された。

彼女のビジョンは、コミュニティへの深い個人的な憧れによって形づくられている。高級スパは美しさと快適さを提供しているものの、彼女が求めていた「人間同士のつながり」がそこには欠けていたのである。

彼女は、人々がただリラックスして元気を回復するだけでなく、出会い、息を合わせ、共に属することができる聖域を思い描いた。そこは、ヨーロッパのサウナ文化と、太平洋岸北西部の開放的で地に足のついた精神が出会う場所となる。

忘れ去られた路地に舞い降りた「落ち葉」の建築

立地そのものが、プロジェクトの物語の一部となった。まちの中心部にひっそりと佇む、見過ごされ、活用されていない路地。狭く忘れ去られたその空間は、変容を待つ白紙のキャンバスのようであった。

Hello Woodとヴィクトリアは、この場所に堅苦しい長方形の形を無理に押し付けるのではなく、建築がその場所の自然な流れに応えるようなアプローチを選択した。

この発想から生まれたのが、葉の形をした建物である。それは、まるで風が吹き寄せ、そのまま留まることを選んだかのような、落ち葉の穏やかな曲線、非対称性、そして静かな知性にインスパイアされたものである。

コンクリートから静寂のオアシスへ

この哲学こそが、〈Aerth Saunas〉の核心にある。Hello Woodもクライアントも、天然素材の力、職人技、そして周辺環境に配慮した持続可能な建築を行う責任を信じている。2つの都市区画の間に位置するこのサウナパークは、かつてコンクリートで覆われていた場所を、静寂に満ちたオアシスへと変貌させた。

7棟のキャビンからなるこの複合施設には、受付棟、3つのサウナ、浴場、更衣室に加え、プランジプールや木製の浴槽といった屋外設備が備わっている。上空から見下ろすと、木で覆われたキャビン群は葉の形を成しており、これは自然とのつながり、成長、そして再生の象徴となっている。

建築がもたらす「生き生きとした感覚」と人々の居場所

〈Aerth Saunas〉は機能性を超え、真の休息と人間同士のつながりの場として設計された。サウナの周囲には、居心地の良い休憩スペース、焚き火場、緑豊かな花壇が配置され、都会の環境に温かみと親密さをもたらしている。この空間は、人々にペースを落とし、共に座り、自分自身だけでなく、互いとのつながりを再確認するよう誘いかける。

AERTH SAUNAS — A HIDDEN OASIS IN THE HEART OF VICTORIA
For Hello Wood, Canada is not unfamiliar ground. In 2016, the Budapest-based studio built a wooden installation in Toronto to honor Hungarian immigrants who fled to Canada after the 1956 revolution. Aerth Saunas marks an important new chapter: it is Hello Wood’s first architectural project in Canada.
The idea was born from a Hungarian born entrepreneur from Victoria, British Columbia — Viktória, the founder of Ærth — whose vision was shaped by a deeply personal longing for community. While high-end spas offered beauty and comfort, they lacked the human connection she was searching for. She imagined a sanctuary where people could not only relax and restore, but also meet, breathe, and belong together. A place where European sauna culture could meet the open, grounded spirit of the Pacific Northwest.
The setting itself became part of the story. Hidden in the middle of the city was an overlooked, underused alleyway, a narrow, forgotten space that felt like a blank canvas waiting for transformation. Rather than forcing rigid, rectangular forms onto the site, Hello Wood and Viktória chose to let the architecture respond to the natural flow of the place. From this idea emerged the leaf-shaped buildings, inspired by the gentle curves, asymmetry, and quiet intelligence of fallen leaves as if the wind had blown them into place and they had simply decided to stay.
This philosophy lies at the heart of Aerth Saunas. Both Hello Wood and the client believe in the power of natural materials, in craftsmanship, and in the responsibility of building sustainably and with sensitivity to context. Nestled between two urban plots, the sauna park transforms a once-concrete site into a serene oasis. The 7-cabin complex includes a reception building, three saunas, a bathhouse, changing rooms, and outdoor features such as a plunge pool and wooden tubs. From above, the timber-clad cabins form the shape of a leaf, a symbol of connection to nature, growth, and renewal.
Beyond functionality, Aerth was designed as a place for genuine rest and human connection. Around the saunas, cozy resting areas, fire pits, and lush garden beds bring warmth and intimacy into the urban setting. The space invites people to slow down, sit together, and reconnect, not just with themselves, but with each other.
Covering approximately 230 square meters, Aerth Saunas stands as both an architectural and cultural landmark in Victoria. It is not simply a spa, but a living, evolving village shaped by people, seasons, and shared moments. Blending Hungarian craftsmanship with Canadian tranquility, Ærth transforms a forgotten alleyway into a place of belonging, proving that architecture can do more than look beautiful: it can feel alive.
