〈Earthen Comforts: Airing Earth〉は、アメリカのロサンゼルスに位置するM&A × Craft Contemporaryの中庭に期間限定で建てられた、酷暑に見舞われる夏の都市に、パッシブクーリングにより涼をもたらすパブリックインスタレーションです。
土製の蓄熱柱と編み込み式のキャノピーという伝統的な手法を再解釈した建築であり、環境への責任と素材の実験を探求する建築家 リズ・ガルベス（Liz Gálvez）と彼女が率いる Office e.g.が設計しました。

ロサンゼルスの夏に涼をもたらすインスタレーション
マテリアルズ&アプリケーションズ（M&A：Materials & Applications）は、リズ・ガルベス（Office e.g.）が主導する中庭インスタレーション〈Earthen Comforts: Airing Earth〉を展示する。本作品はロサンゼルスの夏において、集団的な安らぎをもたらす共有インフラとして、質量と繊維を舞台に演出するものである。
このプロジェクトは、熱的レジリエンスに関する同スタジオの継続的な調査と、熱インフラを建築的・市民的な提案として提示する素材実験を基盤としており、砂漠環境におけるパッシブクーリング戦略をM&A × Craft Contemporaryの中庭に適用したものである。

伝統の再解釈と多様な微気候の体験
〈Earthen Comforts: Airing Earth〉では土製の蓄熱柱と、日陰、空気の流れ、光を調節する軽量の編み込み式キャノピーが組み合わされている。これらのシステムは斬新な発明ではなく、再解釈された伝統の継承である。
石や土のブロック、編み込み式の日よけは、長きにわたり、さまざまな文化や気候において基本的なインフラとして機能してきた。中庭で再構築されたそれらは、暑さの頑固でありながら予測可能な動きを読み解くことを可能にする、実験的な生態系を構成している。
来場者は、涼しく重厚な土、木漏れ日のような編み込みの日よけ、移ろいゆくそよ風など、多様な微気候を体験することになる。これらは、熱設計を単なる「生存」の域を超えて、激化する暑さの中でも喜びや共同参加へと広げていくものである。

熱の不安に対するデザイン的な対応
プログラム内容は、一般参加型の製作活動やワークショップにとどまらず、暑さ、素材の作用、熱力学リテラシーに関するシンポジウムも開催される。これらの取り組みは、都市部で高まる「熱の不安」に対する緊急のデザイン的対応として、共有された学びと実験的なものづくりを前面に押し出すものである。
M&A × Craft Contemporaryの中庭は、M&AとCraft Contemporaryのパートナーシップによるものである。2021年以来、M&Aは毎年夏に中庭を、実験的な建築のパブリック・ワークを核とした会場へと変貌させている。一連の夏のイベントでは、建築家、アーティスト、ストーリーテラーが一堂に会して対話を交わし、都市環境と地域社会との関わり合いに新たな焦点を当てている。

LOS ANGELES—Materials & Applications (M&A) presents Earthen Comforts: Airing Earth, a courtyard installation led by Liz Gálvez (Office e.g.) that stages mass and fiber as shared infrastructures for collective comfort in the Los Angeles summer. Building on the practice’s ongoing investigation into heat resilience and material experimentation by staging thermal infrastructures as architectural and civic propositions, the project adapts passive cooling strategies from desert contexts into the M&A x Craft Contemporary Courtyard.
Earthen thermal mass columns anchor the site, paired with a lightweight, woven canopy that modulates shade, air movement, and light. These systems are not novel inventions but re-imagined inheritances: stone or earthen blocks and woven shade have long functioned as elemental infrastructures across cultures and climates. Recast in the courtyard, they compose an experimental ecology that makes heat’s stubborn but predictable movement legible. Visitors will encounter varied microclimates—cool, heavy earth; dappled woven shade; shifting breezes—that expand thermal design beyond mere survivability toward joy and collective participation in the face of intensifying heat.
“Contemporary design culture continues to privilege mechanical conditioning as the default mode of environmental control, often at great ecological cost,” says Gálvez. “Earthen Comforts reframes this paradigm by re-centering thermal design as an architectural and civic act, intervening in urgent debates around climate adaptation, material practice, and collective life.”
As an infrastructure, Earthen Comforts aims to become a site of experimentation into how we might inhabit heat differently. “M&A is thrilled to produce this project, which emerges from interdisciplinary collaboration between an architect and artists, building scientists, local material researchers, and students pursuing a collective ethos toward meeting our current crises,” shares M&A Director Kate Yeh Chiu.
Programming will extend beyond public fabrication and workshops to include a symposium on heat, material agency, and thermodynamic literacy. Together, these efforts foreground shared learning and experimental making as urgent design responses to increasing heat insecurity in cities.
The M&A x Craft Contemporary Courtyard is a partnership between Materials & Applications and Craft Contemporary. Each summer since 2021, M&A transforms Craft Contemporary’s courtyard into a venue grounded by a public work of experimental architecture. A series of summer events brings architects, artists, and storytellers together into dialogue, with renewed focus on urban environments and community engagement.

About the designer
Liz Gálvez is a registered architect and Assistant Professor of Architecture at UC Berkeley, where she directs the (Im)material Matters Lab. Her practice, Office e.g., investigates building technologies—historical and emerging—through environmental responsibility and material experimentation.
Galvez’s work bridges design, fabrication, and environmental performance, with a focus on ephemeral and degradable building systems. Her recent exhibition, Collective Comfort: Airing on Possibilities (Center for Architecture + Design, San Francisco, 2024–25), presented full-scale prototypes for non-mechanical cooling in desert cities. Her projects have been recognized with the Architectural League Prize, exhibited internationally, and supported by competitive grants.
Through both teaching and practice, she engages architecture as a civic and ecological enterprise, asking how material practices can address climate change while cultivating joy, participation, and collective care.
