距離感と寸法－秦野の設計事務所リノベーション / GRAY-ZONE Design Office

地域との新しい距離感をつくる、立体土間のある設計事務所

「近所に設計事務所ができると嬉しいのだろうか」
市街化調整区域における、弊社建築設計事務所のリノベーション計画（兼用住宅）である。プロジェクトの根底的な考え方として、適切な寸法を考える前に適切な「距離感」を考えたいという想いがあった。

具体的な距離感の例として、「設計者―来客者（施主・近隣住民・友人、知人・未来の施主）」という身の回りの距離感と、「設計事務所―社会（施工業者、メーカー営業との打合せ・他業種の方・仕事上の関わりがない方）」という建築設計業界にまつわる広い視点が挙げられる。

コンビニができたほうが喜ばれそうな立地であることからも、合理的な事務スペースだけではなく、設計事務所に馴染みのない方や、仕事の依頼をしない人にもメリットのある場所づくりについて考えることからこのプロジェクトは始まった。

計画地は神奈川県内唯一の盆地である秦野市。今回の母屋と両隣の3軒並ぶ住宅は親戚関係にある。前面道路は、南側の畑へ出入りする農家の車が通る主要な動線となっているため、決まった時間帯にご近所の往来がある。身近なコミュニケーションのハブとなるべく、どのようにデザインするかという課題があった。

かつてこの場所では大工業を営んでいたため、その際に平屋建ての木材加工場として増築され、さらにその後、2階部分が増築されたという経緯がある。場所のもつ歴史を踏襲しつつ、即興的に増えていった「建築の線」を整えていく必要があった。

地域の地理的な特徴と内部での空間体験を地続きな関係とするため、道路境界線に面する部分にはGL＋500mm程度の立体的な土間空間「アガリドマ」を設けた。アガリドマは設計事務所という非日常的な場所への印象的なアプローチとして、内外から腰掛けられる地域の縁側として、季節の催事スペースとして利用される。人々の営みそのものが建物の顔となり、事務所の前を通るたびに変化のあるファサードとなるよう計画した。

小規模なオフィス計画であるが、住宅のように人を招いたり、店舗のようにひらいた佇まいとすることで、訪れる人それぞれがもつ「設計事務所との距離感」に変化を与えるきっかけとなることを目指している。

An architectural office with a three-dimensional earthen floor that fosters a new sense of connection with the community

“Would people be happy to have an architectural firm open in their neighborhood?”
This is a renovation project (mixed-use residential building) by our architectural firm located in an urban development control zone. At the core of this project was the desire to consider the appropriate “sense of distance” before determining the appropriate dimensions.

Specific examples of this sense of distance include the immediate relationships between “designer and visitors (clients, neighbors, friends, acquaintances, and future clients)” and the broader perspective within the architectural design industry, such as the relationship between “the design firm and society (meetings with contractors and manufacturers’ sales representatives, professionals from other fields, and people with whom we have no professional connection).”

Given that the location seemed ideal for a convenience store—a development likely to be welcomed by the community—this project began with a focus not only on creating a functional office space but also on designing a place that would benefit people unfamiliar with architectural firms and those who do not commission our work.

The site is located in Hadano City, the only basin in Kanagawa Prefecture. Relatives own the main house and the three adjacent houses. The road in front serves as a major thoroughfare for farmers’ vehicles entering and exiting the fields to the south, resulting in neighborhood traffic at specific times of the day. The challenge was to design the space to function as a hub for local communication.

This site once housed a large-scale industrial operation; the building was originally built as a single-story timber processing facility, with a second story added later. We needed to organize the “architectural lines” that had grown haphazardly over time while respecting the site’s history.

To create a seamless connection between the area’s geographical characteristics and the spatial experience inside, a three-dimensional earthen floor space called “Agari-doma,” approximately 500 mm above ground level, was created along the roadside boundary. The Agari-doma serves as an impressive approach to the architectural office—an unconventional space—and functions as a neighborhood veranda where people can sit both inside and outside, as well as for seasonal events. We planned the building so that people’s daily activities themselves become its face, creating a facade that changes every time one passes by the office.

Although this is a small-scale office project, by adopting a welcoming atmosphere like a home and an open presence like a store, we aim to provide an opportunity to alter the “sense of distance from the architectural firm” that each visitor holds.
