〈ソーラーエッグ（Solar Egg）〉は、ラップランドではサウナは「暖をとるだけでなく内省するための部屋」であるという伝統を受け継ぎ、大きく変貌を遂げるスウェーデンの鉱山の町キルナに設置された金色に輝く卵形のサウナです。

30年以上にわたりアートを通じて地球の気候変動に光を当ててきた、ストックホルムに拠点を置くアーティストデュオBigert & Bergströmが作成しました。

地元の人々や町を訪れる人々が集い、町の課題について話し合うことができる社会彫刻としてデザインされており、金色の鏡板と多面的なフォルムが周囲の風景を反射し、風景、鉱山、町、空、太陽、雪が断片的なイメージへと分解することで、気候や持続可能な地域開発に関する議論がもつ複雑さを連想させます。

解体・再構築が可能という特性を活かし、2017年にキルナに設置されて以降はスウェーデンだけでなくデンマークやフランス、アメリカのさまざまな町を旅している作品です。

大きく変貌を遂げる町のための人と人をつなぐ場所

Bigert & Bergströmは、約176,000の集合住宅を管理するスウェーデン最大級の不動産管理業者Riksbyggenからの依頼を受け、卵の形をしたサウナを制作し、スウェーデン最北の町キルナのスキー場であるルオッサバッケン（Luossabacken）に設置した。

2017年のキルナは、町全体の大移動を伴う急激な変貌を遂げようとしていた。これは、鉱山会社LKABが町の地下を斜め下に貫く鉄鉱石をより多く採掘できるようにするためである。

鉄鉱石は19世紀末に採掘が始まって以来、スウェーデンの重要な収入源であり、キルナの町にとって絶対に欠かせないものである。しかし、この移転に伴う景観、環境、建築の破壊的な変貌は、多くの議論を巻き起こしていた。

〈ソーラーエッグ〉は、地元の人々や町を訪れる人々が集い、これらの課題について話し合うことができる社会彫刻としてつくられた。北極圏のラップランドでは、サウナは暖をとり、内省するための部屋という重要な役割を果たしている。

Bigert & Bergströmはこの伝統を受け継ぎ、再生への思考を促す彫刻的シンボルであり、会話とアイデアの交換を育むインキュベーターでもある〈ソーラーエッグ〉を開発した。このプロジェクトは、1994年にBigert & Bergströmが作成した〈Climate Chambers〉から始まった、作品の体験に風土を取り入れるという戦略を継承している。

周囲の風景を映し出し分解する金色の鏡

卵はステンレスの金色の鏡板でできており、その多面的なフォルムは周囲の環境を反射し、さまざまな鏡像に分解する。風景、鉱山、町、空、太陽、雪が断片的なイメージに組み合わされ、気候や持続可能な地域開発に関する議論がもつ複雑さを連想させる。

卵の内部は木でできており、壁パネルと床のデッキはパイン材、ベンチはアスペン材でできている。中央には鉄と石でつくられた、心臓の形をした薪で暖めるサウナストーブが置かれており、内部の温度は75度から85度の間で変化する。

Riksbyggenが所有する〈ソーラーエッグ〉は4〜5日での組み立てが可能であり、2017年4月にキルナに設置されて以降、世界のさまざまな町を旅している。

フランス – パリ
2017年11月

パリ、マレ地区の17世紀に建てられたホテルドマールの中に位置するSwedish Instituteにて開催されたプロジェクト「Swedish Design Moves Paris」の一環として、2017年11月15日から12月10日まで、Swedish Instituteの中庭に展示された。

プロジェクトの新たなレイヤーとして、来場者が〈ソーラーエッグ〉のサウナに入りながら使用できる着物を、スウェーデンのファッションデザイナーであるディアナ・オーヴィング（Diana Orving）がデザインした。

2018年1月

ストックホルム群島に位置するアート施設 Artipelagにて、2017年から2018年の冬にかけてBigert & Bergströmが開催した展覧会「Eye of the Storm」にて、〈ソーラーエッグ〉は施設内の公園に設置された。

スウェーデン – イェリバレ
2018年6月

イェリバレはラップランドで2番目に重要な鉱山の町であり、キルナと同様に、町の歴史的な部分は採掘のために移動しなければならないという状況であった。

最大5,000人の家屋が取り壊され、安全でない地域は閉鎖されなければならない中、2018年夏、〈ソーラーエッグ〉は川に隣接した公園に設置された。

2023年2月11日から5月21日まで開催されたBigert & Bergströmの個展「The Broken Greenhouse」に関連して、シェルレフテオー・ミュージアム（Skellefteå Konsthall）のテラスに〈ソーラーエッグ〉は設置された。

この作品は今後、鉱山都市キルナに恒久的に設置される予定となっている。

SOLAR EGG
2017

In response to a commission from Riksbyggen, Bigert & Bergström have created a sculptural chamber in the form of an egg-shaped sauna that has been installed at Luossabacken in Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost town.

Kiruna is currently undergoing a radical transformation, which involves a gigantic move for the whole town. This is so that the mining company LKAB can extract more of the iron seam that cuts diagonally downwards beneath the town. The iron ore is and has been – ever since it first began to be extracted at the end of the 19th century – an important source of income for Sweden, and absolutely vital for the town of Kiruna. No mine, no town. But the breaking up and devastating transformation of the landscape, the environment and the architecture caused by the move are also sparking a lot of debate.

Solar Egg has been made as a social sculpture where local people and visitors to the town can meet and, for instance, discuss these challenges. In the arctic climate of Lapland the sauna occupies a key position, as a room for warmth and reflection. B&B have taken up this tradition and developed a sculptural symbol that prompts thoughts of rebirth and an incubator that nurtures conversation and exchanges of ideas. The project is a continuation of the artists’ strategy to incorporate the climate into the experience of the artwork which was initiated with the Climate Chambers in 1994.

The egg is made out of stainless golden mirror sheeting, its multifaceted form breaking up the surroundings that it reflects into a multiplicity of different mirror images. Landscape, mine, town, sky, sun and snow are here combined into a fragmented image that can evoke associations with the complexity spanned by today’s discussion about climate and sustainable community development.

The egg’s interior has been formed out of wood, with the wall panels and floor decking made out of pine and the bench of aspen. In the center of the egg stand the wood-heated, heart-shaped sauna stove made out of iron and stone. The temperature inside the egg varies between 75° and 85° Celsius.

During the summer of 2017, Solar Egg was moved further out onto the mountains of Lappland, to Abisko and Björkliden.

PARIS
NOVEMBER 2017
The Swedish Institute in Paris is situated in the Marais Quarter, in the Hôtel de Marle from the seventeenth century. Within the framework of the project Swedish Design Moves Paris, Solar Egg was exhibited in the courtyard of the Swedish Institute from 15 November to 10 December 2017. As a new layer to the project, the Swedish fashion designer Diana Orving has designed kimonos for visitors to use while taking a sauna in the egg.

STOCKHOLM
JANUARY 2018
In Stockholm’s archipelago lies the art institution Artipelag, where Bigert & Bergström presented their exhibition Eye of the Storm in the winter of 2017-2018. Solar Egg was placed in the institution’s park.

GÄLLIVARE
JUNE 2018
Gällivare is Lappland’s second-most important mining town and similarly to Kiruna, historical parts of the town have to be moved due to mining. Up to 5 000 people’s homes have to be demolished and the unsafe area closed off. In the summer of 2018, Solar Egg was placed in the town park next to the river.

COPENHAGEN
SEPTEMBER 2018
Kunsthal Charlottenborg is one of Denmark’s leading museums for contemporary art. It is situated in Kunstakademins historical buildings close to Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv. Solar Egg was displayed in the museum’s courtyard throughout the fall of 2018.

MINNEAPOLIS
MARCH 2019
From March 6 to April 28, 2019, Solar Egg was temporarily resided in the courtyard the American Swedish Institute, Minneapolis.

RÄTTVIK
JUNE 2019
Between June and August 2019, Solar Egg was placed at Siljan beach in Rättvik, Sweden.

STOCKHOLM
OCTOBER 2021—MARCH 2022
Solar Egg was displayed in Djurgården as part of the group exhibition Expedition Konst (Art) (30.10.2021—20.03.2022) at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde.

SKELLEFTEÅ
2023
Solar Egg has been placed on the terras of Skellefteå Konsthall in relation to Bigert & Bergström`s solo exhibition, The Broken Greenhouse which will be on view between 11th February and 21st of May 2023.
