A residence with a tolerant attitude, breathing life into the gaps between cities
The site is located in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. A busy arterial road runs along the south side. When planning a residential building within a monotonous streetscape of street trees and storefronts, we reconsidered the design of the eaves and the relationship between the road and sidewalk, aiming to create an airy space that does not overwhelm passersby in the densely populated area.
Specifically, instead of building the volume to the sidewalk, we aligned the eaves with the neighboring property while setting them back. The building is a three-story mixed-structure design with a reinforced concrete first floor and wooden second and third floors. By concentrating the volume of the first floor at the center of the site, we created a sense of floating for the entire structure, and by manipulating the volume of the upper floors, we reduced the feeling of oppression. The eaves are designed as a cantilever with a depth of 2,275mm, and the projection is kept to 215mm for a light and airy expression. Additionally, planting spaces are provided above and below the eaves, creating a three-dimensional garden that generates a “blank space” within the city, offering a deep, embracing design that absorbs the hustle and bustle.
The first-floor exterior space is a flexible area limited to parking and other functions. The interior space is composed of an entrance and storage area on the first floor, an LDK and bathroom facilities on the second floor, and family bedrooms on the third floor. However, the interior is also conceived as an extension of the “blank space,” with weak boundaries created by open spaces and branch-like round columns rather than solid walls. The functionality of the space becomes apparent only when furniture or bathtubs are placed within these boundaries.
Large openings on the south and east sides of the second floor allow ample light and air into the interior, while the “white space” serves as a buffer zone between the house and the street, gently connecting the two. Since the site is located in a quasi-fireproof zone, decorative columns with fire-resistant layers are placed at the boundaries between the interior and exterior. However, the relatively wide column width is utilized to conceal the window frames and vertical frames from the interior. Additionally, steel braces are adopted for the load-bearing walls, and the interior finish is a mortar-based plaster finish. By minimizing elements that differentiate the interior and exterior, the design aims for a seamless relationship between the street, the “white space,” and the interior.
Within the limited site area of the city, which is rational, efficient, and almost cramped, the “open space” makes the house a place of endless freedom and openness, providing a sense of security that brings comfort to both oneself and others. (Takanobu Kishimoto)
