熊本県甲佐町の中心市街地、商店街の中に計画した「ランドスケープオフィス」。地域と企業、暮らしと働くこと、自然とまちをゆるやかに繋ぎ、誰にとっても開かれた”まちの公園”のような存在を目指した起業支援拠点である。
設計から竣工までわずか8カ月という厳しいスケジュールの中、事業主から提示されたコンテナやプレハブの活用条件を前提に、プレハブ特有の簡易でチープな印象を払拭し、商店街や甲佐町の風景に呼応するデザインを模索した。
全体構成として、5.5×2.3mのプレハブユニット8基を3つのボリュームにまとめ、それらを包み込むように高さの異なる2枚の大屋根を架けた。屋根は日差しを和らげ、風や光を取り込みながら内外を繋ぎ、町に点在する個人商店や疎水沿いの景観と連続する居場所をつくった。
敷地全体を公園として位置付け、西側は大井出川を望む静かな空間、東側は芝生広場やマウンドを活かした開放的な空間とし、静と動がグラデーションのように連続する構成とした。屋外でのデスクワークやミーティング、プレゼンテーションが可能な環境を整え、屋内外を連続的に活用できる新たな職場のあり方を提示している。働く場であると同時に、地域の人々が集い、地域に根差した企業が自然に育まれ、まちとともに成長していく拠点となることを意図した。
地域に溶け込み、愛着をもたれる場とするため、外壁には商店街など周辺環境から抽出した左官壁や板壁などの素材を使用し、甲佐町らしさを想起させるモチーフや色彩を取り入れた。強い日差しを遮る2階テラスは人工芝を敷いたオープンエリアとし、イベントやセミナー、地域のお祭りなど多様な使い方に対応する。商店街前面道路との連続性を重視し、段差のない緩やかな勾配で建物と接続。一方、芝生広場には傾斜をもたせ、子供の飛び出し防止と公園のゲート機能を兼ねた。
植栽は甲佐町の気候に適した樹種を選び、地域住民とのワークショップで構成を検討した。花期が長く季節を感じられる宿根草を多く取り入れ、蝶や虫を引き寄せることで環境への気付きや地域への愛着を育むことを意図した。こうした自然と地域の関係性を敷地全体に丁寧に編み込み、公園のように多様で柔軟な場を実現している。
本施設は、公共空間の不足や商店街の回遊性といった地域課題に応えつつ、これからの働き方に対応する新たな拠点として、甲佐町の活性化と継続的な発展に寄与することを目指している。（阿部悠子）
A landscape office open to the city, built with a large roof and prefabricated units
The “Landscape Office” is planned within the shopping district of Kosa Town’s central downtown area. It aims to be an entrepreneurial support hub that gently connects the community with businesses, blending work and living with nature, and serving as an open “town park” for everyone.
Working within a demanding schedule of just eight months from design to completion, the design sought to overcome the simplistic and cheap impression often associated with prefabricated structures. This was achieved while adhering to the client’s requirement to utilize containers and prefabricated elements, creating a design that harmonizes with the shopping district and the landscape of Kosa Town.
The overall composition groups eight 5.5×2.3m prefab units into three volumes, enveloped by two large roofs of varying heights. These roofs soften sunlight, draw in wind and light, and connect interior and exterior spaces, creating a continuous place that links with the scattered individual shops and the landscape along the irrigation canal.
The entire site is positioned as a park. The west side offers a tranquil space overlooking the Oide River. In contrast, the east side features an open area utilizing a lawn plaza and mound, creating a composition where stillness and activity flow together like a gradient. The environment facilitates outdoor desk work, meetings, and presentations, proposing a new workplace model that seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces. It is intended not only as a workplace but also as a hub where residents gather, locally rooted businesses naturally flourish, and the town grows together.
To blend into the community and foster a sense of attachment, the exterior walls use materials like plaster and board walls inspired by the surrounding environment, such as the shopping district. Motifs and colors evocative of Kosa Town’s character were incorporated. The second-floor terrace, designed to block strong sunlight, is an open area with artificial turf, accommodating diverse uses like events, seminars, and local festivals. Emphasizing continuity with the road fronting the shopping district, the building connects via a gentle, step-free slope. Conversely, the lawn plaza features a slope to prevent children from running out and also serves as a park gate.
Plantings were selected to include tree species suited to Kosa Town’s climate, with compositions determined through workshops with residents. Many long-blooming perennials were incorporated to evoke the seasons, aiming to foster environmental awareness and community attachment by attracting butterflies and insects. This careful weaving of nature and community connections throughout the site creates a diverse, flexible space akin to a park.
This facility aims to contribute to Kosa Town’s revitalization and sustainable development. It addresses local challenges, such as insufficient public space and shopping district circulation, while serving as a new hub that accommodates evolving work styles. (Yuko Abe)
