静岡市清水区の住宅地に建つ住宅である。敷地は低層住宅や3階建てオフィスに囲まれた場所で、南側には道路を挟んで小学校が建つ。計画では、敷地中央にL字型平面の建物を配置し、南側道路に面して駐車場、北側に庭を設けた。その上に内外を横断する大屋根を架けることで、敷地全体を包み込み、広がりと奥行きのある空間をつくることを目指した。庭は地域に開かれた「余白」としての空地とし、光や風を周辺の住宅へと導く。
大屋根の架構は、L字型平面の上を折れ曲がりながら架け渡され、お互いに支え合うようにして構造が成立している。この屋根形状により、空間の方向性を分散させると同時に、周辺環境に対して威圧感のない佇まいとし、隣家に影を落とさないよう配慮した。また、地盤面は道路面より上げることで水害に備えるとともに、道行く人と住人の視線をずらしてる。
南側道路から見ると、軒の低い切妻屋根の平屋建てのように見えるが、異なる勾配屋根により2階建ての気積を確保している。玄関アプローチから隣家との隙間を抜けると庭が広がり、奥にいくほど周囲の視線から守られた居場所となる。顔馴染みの西側隣家との境界にはあえて塀を設けず、庭を介してゆるやかに繋がる関係性を築いた。
ひとつながりの内部空間は、対角線上に走る棟木が視線を斜め奥へと導き、実際以上の奥行きを感じさせる。また、庭に対して全面開口部をつくり開放的にしながらも、大屋根により周囲の視線や日射を遮ることで落ち着きを与えている。トラス架構により2.7m跳ね出した大屋根にはスリットが設けられており、時間や季節に応じて異なる表情の光を軒下と室内に届ける。
2階ホールから出入りできるバルコニーに立つと、スリットから顔を出すようにして小学校の桜や周辺の緑、遠くの山々を望むことができる。折れ屋根が外部環境との距離感を調整し、小さいながらも豊かで、居心地のよい大らかな住空間をつくる。

A house that appears to be a single-story structure, while incorporating the volume of two stories
This residence is located in a residential area of Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City. Low-rise houses and a three-story office building, with an elementary school across the road to the south, surround the site. The plan places an L-shaped building at the site’s center, with a parking lot facing the southern road and a garden to the north. A large roof spanning both interior and exterior spaces was designed to envelop the entire site, aiming to create expansive and deep spatial qualities. The garden functions as an open “blank space” accessible to the neighborhood, guiding light and wind toward the surrounding homes.
The large roof structure spans the L-shaped plan, bending and folding as it extends, with its components mutually supporting each other to form the structure. This roof shape disperses the building’s spatial orientation while ensuring it presents a non-intimidating presence to the surroundings and avoids casting shadows on neighboring properties. Elevating the ground level above the road surface prepares for flooding while also shifting the sightlines between passersby and residents.
Viewed from the south road, it appears as a single-story gable-roofed structure with low eaves, yet the use of different roof pitches secures the volume of a two-story building. Passing through the gap between the house and the neighbor from the entrance approach reveals the garden, which becomes a more secluded space protected from surrounding views the further one goes. A wall was deliberately omitted along the boundary with the familiar western neighbor, fostering a loosely connected relationship mediated by the garden.
The continuous interior space features diagonal ridge beams that guide the gaze diagonally into the depth, creating a sense of greater spatial extension than exists. While fully opening to the garden, the large roof shields against views and sunlight, imparting a sense of calm. The large roof, cantilevered 2.7 meters via truss framing, incorporates slits. These deliver light with varying expressions under the eaves and indoors, changing with time and season.
Standing on the balcony accessible from the second-floor hall, one can glimpse the elementary school’s cherry blossoms, surrounding greenery, and distant mountains through the slits, as if they were peeking out. The folded roof adjusts the sense of distance from the external environment, creating a rich, comfortable, and generously spacious living area despite its compact size.
