インドの建築事務所 Stapatiが設計を手がけた〈Ko.Co（Kottayam Company）〉は、インド・ケララ州コッタヤムに位置する、築150年の伝統的家屋を改修したレストランです。

地域の歴史的な文脈を色濃く残す既存の構造を活かした「アダプティブリユース」により、地域社会に新たなアイデンティティをもたらす空間へと再生させています。

〈Ko.Co〉は、インド・コッタヤムの住宅がもつ既存の文脈を活かした、築150年の歴史ある住居を活気あふれるレストランへと再生させたプロジェクトである。

アダプティブリユースを通じて、このケララ州の伝統的な家屋は、敷地に新たなアイデンティティをもたらしつつ、地域社会とのつながりを再構築するユニークなダイニングスペースへと生まれ変わっている。

新旧が調和する構造的介入とマテリアル

本改修では、建物の本質を保ちつつ新たな機能を取り入れるため、既存の空間を慎重に再構築した。豊かな自然光を取り入れるために屋根や壁の一部を撤去するなど、構造上の変更は最小限に抑えられている。

そこにMSシート、ガラス、セメントといった素材が現代的な要素として導入され、元の歴史的な構造と軽やかに調和している。さらに、金属板のプロファイルが屋根の形状を補強・延長し、夜になると印象的なシルエットを描き出す、特徴的なエントランスを創出している。

屋内外をシームレスにつなぐ活気に満ちたインテリア

室内空間では、むき出しのレンガ壁が、磨き上げられたコンクリートの床やシンプルなワイヤーフレームの家具と美しい対照をなしている。随所に施された黄色のアクセントが空間に若々しい活気を添え、ガラス壁と長い共有テーブルが、室内と屋外の空間をシームレスにつなぎ合わせている。

Drawing from the existing fabric of Kottayam’s housing, the Ko.Co Project revitalizes a 150-year-old residence into a vibrant restaurant. Through adaptive reuse, the ancestral Kerala house is transformed into a quirky dining space that introduces a new identity to the site while reconnecting it with the neighborhood.
The intervention carefully reimagines the existing spaces to accommodate new functions while preserving the building’s essence. Minimal structural changes were made, including removing small sections of the roof and walls to bring in natural daylight. Materials such as MS sheets, glass, and cement were introduced as contemporary inserts that sit lightly against the original structure. A sheet-metal profile reinforces and extends the roof form to create a distinctive entrance that becomes a striking silhouette after dark.
Inside, exposed brick walls contrast with polished cement floors and simple wireframe furniture. Touches of yellow add youthful energy, while glass walls and a long community table create a seamless connection between interior and outdoor spaces.
