北海道札幌市郊外の緩やかな斜面に計画された小さなパビリオンである。
周囲には高架道路などの人工的環境と、河川沿いの豊かな自然が混在し、その相反する要素のあいだに人々が集い、座って語らう「小さな拠り所」をつくることが求められた。このプロジェクトは、敷地全体を利用し、時間をかけながら人々の居場所となるような場づくりの一環として始まった。
本計画はローコストを前提としたため、特殊工法を避け、1人の大工で実現できる既存技術を基盤とした。それ故に、構造・素材・環境など異なる要素を出来るだけ等価に扱うことで、簡素ながらも正直な佇まいになるのではないかと考えた。
建物は4,550mm角の平面と最小の水回りで構成され、主要な床レベルを半地下とすることで、北海道特有の凍結深度を逆利用した基礎計画を成立させている。基礎上には異なるリズムで柱と筋交いを配し、四周に自律した開口部を設けて外部環境を内部へ取り込む。開口寸法やディティールは周辺環境や日射条件から導かれ、それに重なる構造体自体が居場所を規定すると同時に、建物外観には軽やかな印象を与えている。
中央には45度に振られた象徴的な柱と2本の斜梁を据えることで、浮遊感のある床を実現させている。上階は熱損失と気積を抑えるため天井高と開口を最小限に抑えたロフト空間としているが、四周の吹抜けを介して下層の柔らかな光が導かれ、上下階の気配が緩やかに重なる。
既製材と単純な工法によるミニマルな構成ながら、要素同士の等価な関係が多様な居場所と単なるヒューマンスケールを超えた豊かさを生み出し、自由な振る舞いを受け止める普遍的な拠り所となった。

A studio with a minimal composition that weaves together disparate elements into a cohesive whole
Conceived as a small multifunctional pavilion and studio, the project began with a simple question: how can we create a sense of openness and generosity within a limited footprint while keeping costs low?
At the outset of this project, we considered how to create an open and spacious environment within the small footprint while keeping costs low. Thus, a building with a 4.55m square space, requiring minimal electricity and plumbing, emerges.
First, we lowered the building volume 720mm into the ground to create a base. Openings on all four sides of the top of the base encourage activities like walking, sitting, working, and eating, while ensuring horizontal spaciousness by incorporating the surrounding garden.
Next, to avoid a feeling of a space that might be too confined, the upper loft is open on all four sides. The floor is composed of a symbolic pillar tilted 45 degrees in the centre of the space and a diagonal beam that intersects it. This connects the upper and lower floors while also achieving a broad cross-section.
Typically, with a span of 4.55m, it is possible to create a column-free space by hanging a large beam; however, cross-sections of large materials do not suit this minimal space. On the contrary, this central pillar and diagonal beam serve as a base, highlighting the four spaces that are further subdivided into smaller areas.
Within this small universe-like environment, the cross-sectional structure ensures a spacious feel. By further dividing the small environment, freedom is created.
