東京都にある築43年RC造マンションの最上階1室。建物群を望む抜けのある眺望が魅力的だ。68.3m²で少し変わったL型住戸は、2人暮らしには余裕があり、余白の活用を含め提案して欲しいという建主からの要望に、正円の壁で住宅空間と、余白空間を隣り合わせにする計画を提案した。L型により生まれる諸室の距離感を尊重しつつ、円形の壁によってシームレスな繋がりのある住宅をつくろうとした。
バブル以降の世代にとってマンションが林立する都内の風景は、生まれながらにそこにある環境だ。そこに好みの場所を見つけて住み着く行為は、かつて洞窟を住処に見立てて住み着いた人類と同じような感覚ではないか？
初めてこの住戸を道路から見上げた時に、まさにカッパドキアの洞窟住居ように見えた。そこで、L型の部屋の内側は、街と住機能の中間領域とし、素材の統一や凹凸、照明のあり方など洞窟的な空間づくりを意識した。そうすることで、道から見上げた時に窓からは、生活感とは違う壁面が覗く。
L型の部屋と曲線の重なりによって、空間の広さ狭さの変化がまた、幾何学的な図式を裏切る洞窟的体験を提供する。
円の内側（おもて）は2人の居心地を発見していく抽象的な空間である。バーチ材で統一し、350ピッチの間柱をあらわしとすることで、空間に一定のリズムを生みながら、L型の向こうに自然と意識が向かうような空間とした。
円の外側（うら）は合板で仕上げることで、フラットな曲面により住機能を満たす室が並ぶ。床の仕上げの変化で、各部屋を区切らずに定義づける。
最上階で開口も多い。外壁、天井をすべて断熱施工し、全開口部に内窓を設置した。全面を断熱材で囲むことで、非断熱状態に比べ外気の影響を受けずに室内の熱環境をコントロールしやすくなり、円弧の壁により分節された空間でもエアコンは1台で快適に過ごせるようになっている。円弧の壁に設けた開口により空気の流れを遮らない間取りになっていることも効果的である。視認できていなくても気積が大きいことは、オープンな場所での心地よさをつくっている。

An apartment renovation where curved walls gently define the space
This is a top-floor unit in a 43-year-old reinforced concrete apartment building in Tokyo. Its appeal lies in the unobstructed view overlooking the surrounding buildings. The 68.3 m² L-shaped unit offers ample space for a couple. In response to the client’s request to propose a design that makes use of the available open space, we proposed a plan that places the living space and the open space side by side, separated by a circular wall. While respecting the spatial relationships created by the L-shape, we sought to create a home with a seamless connection through circular walls.
For the post-bubble generation, the landscape of Tokyo—filled with densely packed apartment buildings—is an environment they have known since birth. Isn’t the act of finding a place one likes and settling there similar to the sensation humans once felt when they made caves their homes?
When I first looked up at this residence from the street, it looked exactly like a cave dwelling in Cappadocia. Therefore, I treated the interior of the L-shaped room as an intermediate zone between the city and the living space, consciously creating a cave-like atmosphere through the unification of materials, textural variations, and lighting design. By doing so, when viewed from the street, the walls visible through the windows convey a sense of space distinct from the everyday life within.
The interplay between the L-shaped room and the curves creates shifts in spatial scale that offer a cave-like experience, defying geometric expectations.
The interior (front) of the circle is an abstract space where the couple discovers their comfort. By unifying the space with birch wood and exposing the 350-mm-spaced studs, we created a rhythm while naturally drawing the eye toward the L-shaped section.
The outer side of the circle is finished with plywood, featuring a series of rooms that fulfill residential functions through flat curved surfaces. Changes in floor finishes define each room without physically partitioning them.
The top floor features numerous openings. The exterior walls and ceilings are fully insulated, and interior windows have been installed in all openings. By enclosing the entire structure with insulation, the indoor thermal environment is easier to control, unaffected by outside air, compared to a non-insulated state. Even within the spaces segmented by the curved walls, a single air conditioner is sufficient to maintain comfort. The layout, which features openings in the curved walls to prevent obstructing airflow, is also effective. The large air volume, even if not immediately visible, contributes to a sense of comfort in the open spaces.
