The Kuniga Coast rises with towering, rugged cliffs. Above the sea surface, at 257 meters, lies a range of caldera-shaped mountains where cattle and horses graze peacefully.
Left to their own devices, these mountains would become overgrown with forest, creating a closed-off landscape; however, grazing cattle and horses prevent vegetation from growing into tall trees, and the slopes remain grasslands dominated by perennial plants. The combination of a landscape formed by natural tectonic movements and one opened up through human intervention creates a uniquely spectacular scene.

With just slight human intervention, the landscape opens up, and its value becomes visible. People provide the vantage point. This bears a striking resemblance to the very essence of architecture.

The breathtaking view from Kunigaso, perched on a hilltop, seems to speak eloquently to this. Among the rooms, Room 211—located in the southeast corner, where the inner sea of Shimamae spreads out in a panoramic view, and breezes flow into the harbor—holds particular potential as a vantage point.

We devised a plan to maximize this value and transform the space into a place for contemplating the island’s natural environment and history. The expansive landscape offers ever-changing scenes from sunrise to sunset. By removing the window frames and raising the bed about 1 meter above floor level, we ensured that this spectacle can be enjoyed throughout the day. Additionally, we strategically placed windows on the north and south sides to allow cross-ventilation and create multiple pathways for the breeze to flow through. The simple rattan-covered window frames moderately soften the sunlight while making the invisible breeze visible, imparting a sense of coolness.

While preserving the building’s straightforward structural framework, we have harmonized with Kunigaso’s history by keeping the interior decor understated while paying meticulous attention to detail.
For the wood finishes, we carefully sought the perfect color blend—through repeated prototyping—to evoke both the texture of solid Oki cedar and Kunigaso’s nostalgic atmosphere.

“Jinakachi” is the name of a wind unique to this region, dating back to the era when Oki flourished as a port where Kitamae ships would rest their sails. In Uragō, where Kunigaso is located, this wind blows into the harbor, welcoming ships weary from their long voyages.

We hope that time will continue to flow peacefully in this place, serving as a source of healing for travelers for generations to come.
