フランス・サンテティエンヌのエクスプロラ・パーク（Explora Park）に建つ〈ムカルナス・パビリオン（Muqarnas Pavilion）〉は、イスラム建築の伝統装飾「ムカルナス」をパラメトリックな計算手法を用いて現代的に再構築した空間です。

パリとブリュッセルを拠点とする設計事務所 NEW SOUTHとエンジニアのラディ・ベン・ハディッド（Radhi Ben Hadid）、イスタンブールのゴルボン・セラミックス（Gorbon Ceramics）による協働プロジェクトです。

ムカルナスの再解釈：工芸・生態学・技術の融合

NEW SOUTHは、エンジニアのラディ・ベン・ハディッド（チュニス、パリ）、およびゴルボン・セラミックス（イスタンブール）と協働し、イスラム建築装飾の象徴である「ムカルナス（Muqarnas）」を現代的なパビリオンとして再解釈した。このプロジェクトは、工芸、生態学、そして技術を結びつける試みである。

イスラム圏のモスクや宮殿の天井に伝統的に施されてきた装飾システムであるムカルナスは、ここでは単なる装飾ではなく、空間的かつ生態学的な装置として再考されている。パラメトリックな計算手法によって設計され、工業用グレードのセラミックで製造されたこのパビリオンは、先祖伝来の形態が新たな建設手法や組立、そして意味の様式にどのような影響を与えうるかを探求するものである。

空間装置としての進化と「共存」へのまなざし

2022年にブリュッセルのCIVAで開発された初期プロトタイプでは、ムカルナスを自立構造システムとして実験していた。対して、2025年9月にフランス・サンテティエンヌのエクスプロラ・パーク（Explora Park）で公開された最終パビリオンは、その探求をさらに拡大させている。デザインの焦点は聖なる空間の象徴的・環境的側面へと移り、装飾を「人間と非人間的生命の共存の場」として活用しているのである。

パビリオンは互いにかみ合う陶器のピースによって構築された半ドーム形状をとり、その複雑な表面のレリーフが小型生物のための微小生息地（マイクロハビタット）を形成する。オスマン帝国の聖なるファサードに見られる「ツバメの巣」に着想を得たこれらのテクスチャは、パビリオンを生きた生態系へと変容させる。これは、生物多様性、ケア、そしてマイクロバイオームについての考察を促す建築的ジェスチャーに他ならない。

技術と生態学を仲介する聖なる建築

物質的・象徴的両層に働きかける本プロジェクトは、聖なる建築が技術と生態学の仲介役となり得ることを示唆している。それは文化的断絶ではなく、継続性を通じて持続可能性を再構想する枠組みを提供する。

「現代イスラム建築において革新を中核的力として再確立すると同時に、グローバル・サウス発の物語を前面に押し出すことが我々の志向である」と設計者は語る。

この共同プロジェクトでは、デザイナー、エンジニア、そして学生が実践的なプロセスで協働し、デジタルモデリングと伝統的な陶磁器製作を融合させた。部品製造は、工業的・職人的な製造の両方に深いルーツをもつイスタンブールのゴルボン・セラミックス社が担った。

各部品は相互に噛み合うよう設計されており、最小限の機械的固定でパビリオンの組み立てが可能である。これにより歴史的工芸の精密さを反映しつつ、現代的なデザイン論理を取り入れた。

教育的実験と「生きた装飾」の可能性

NEW SOUTHの共同創設者メリエム・シャバニ（Meriem Chabani）にとって、このパビリオンは技術的実験であると同時に教育的・文化的実験でもある。

「ENSAサンテティエンヌの学生たちと構築した本プロジェクトは、実物大実験を超え、現代建築論における『南（サウス）』の建築と知識の影響力を問い直すものである。また、学生たちと『俗と聖』『装飾と機能』『人間と非人間の共存』の関係性について対話を開く機会でもあった。」

こうして生まれた構造物は、研究・教育・文化生産の交差点に位置し、グローバル・サウス（南半球）の建築が現代の課題に新たな視座を提供しうる可能性を探求するというNEW SOUTHの取り組みを拡張している。

装飾を過剰な虚飾として扱うのではなく、このパビリオンは美的・生態学的・社会的関心事の仲介役としての装飾の能力を示している。記憶と創造の両方を体現する「生きた装飾」なのである。

産業遺産によって歴史的に定義されてきた都市サンテティエンヌにおいて、パビリオンの繊細な陶器の幾何学は対照的な存在として立ち現れる。それは、技術革新と精神的省察が必ずしも対立する必要はないという気づきを、見る者に呼び起こすのである。

Architecture studio NEW SOUTH (Algiers, Paris) has collaborated with engineer Radhi Ben Hadid (Tunis, Paris) and Gorbon Ceramics (Istanbul) to reinterpret the muqarnas—a hallmark of Islamic architectural ornamentation—as a contemporary pavilion that bridges craft, ecology, and technology.
The muqarnas, a decorative system traditionally applied to the ceilings of mosques and palaces across the Islamic world, is here reimagined not as mere ornament, but as a spatial and ecological device. Designed through parametric computational methods and fabricated in industrial-grade ceramic, the pavilion explores how ancestral forms can inform new modes of construction, assembly, and meaning.
While an initial prototype developed at CIVA, Brussels, in 2022 experimented with the muqarnas as a self-supporting structural system, the final pavilion, inaugurated in September 2025 at Explora Park in Saint-Étienne, France, broadens this inquiry. The design shifts its focus toward the symbolic and environmental dimensions of sacred space—using ornament as a site of coexistence between human and non-human life.
The pavilion takes the form of a semi-dome built from interlocking ceramic pieces, whose intricate surface reliefs create microhabitats for small species. These textures, inspired by the swallow nests found on Ottoman sacred facades, transform the pavilion into a living ecosystem—an architectural gesture that invites reflection on biodiversity, care, and the microbiome.
By engaging both material and symbolic registers, the project suggests that sacred architecture can act as a mediator between technology and ecology, offering a framework for reimagining sustainability through cultural continuity rather than rupture. “The ambition,” say the architects, “is to re-establish innovation as a central force in contemporary Islamic architecture, while foregrounding narratives from the Global South.”
The collaboration brought together designers, engineers, and students in a hands-on process that combined digital modeling and traditional ceramic production. The components were manufactured by Gorbon Ceramics in Istanbul, a company with deep roots in both industrial and artisanal fabrication. Each piece was designed for interlocking assembly, allowing the pavilion to be built with minimal mechanical fixings—echoing the precision of historical craft while embracing contemporary design logic.
For Meriem Chabani, co-founder of NEW SOUTH, the pavilion is as much a pedagogical and cultural experiment as it is a technical one. “This project, built with the students of ENSA Saint-Étienne, questions—beyond full-scale experimentation—the influence of architectures and knowledge from the South in contemporary architectural discourse,” she explains. “It is also an opportunity to open a conversation with the students on the relationship between profane and sacred, ornament and function, coexistence between human and non-human.”
The resulting structure sits at the intersection of research, education, and cultural production, extending New South’s commitment to exploring how architecture from the Global South can offer fresh perspectives on contemporary challenges. Rather than treating ornament as decorative excess, the pavilion demonstrates its capacity to mediate between aesthetic, ecological, and social concerns—a “living ornament” that embodies both memory and invention.
In Saint-Étienne, a city historically defined by its industrial legacy, the pavilion’s delicate ceramic geometry offers a counterpoint: a reminder that technological innovation and spiritual reflection need not be opposites.
