インドのパルガートに建つ〈Kalam〉は、20年以上も放置されていた築100年の穀物倉庫を再生したブティック・ファームハウスです。

築100年の廃墟の再生

20年の時を経て廃墟と化したその建物は、忘れ去られた空間と浪費された可能性を静かに物語っていた。しかし、見捨てられた構造物には常に、新たな解釈を待つ隠された物語が宿っている。

1世紀を経た穀物倉庫は、20年以上の放置期間を経て、建築的創意と厳選された素材により、ブティック・ファームハウスへと丁寧に生まれ変わった。西ガーツ山脈の雄大な景色を背景に、緑豊かな水田と静かな池に囲まれた〈Kalam〉は、素朴な魅力と時代を超えた美しさを体現している。

解体ではなく「再生」という選択

本プロジェクトでは、既存の構造体を保存しつつ、ベランダと浴室が増築された。我々のビジョンは、解体と新築ではなく「再生」にある。既存のものを、確かな目的をもち、持続可能で、文化とコミュニティに深く根ざしたものへと変容させることこそが狙いである。

風景を切り取り、風を導く空間構成

空間構成は、田園と池の静謐な景観をフレームに収めるように計画されている。自然の風が室内を通り抜けるよう開口部を配置し、自然換気を確保した。

景観に包み込むように設計された浴室では、浴槽から遮るもののない田園風景が広がる。すべての空間は、村の生活様式に適応しつつ、ゲストに快適さを提供するよう形成されている。また、既存の植栽は自然の冷却効果を得るために残され、滞在体験を周囲の景観とシームレスに融合させている。

素朴さと温もりが共存するマテリアル

外装色は自然と調和するよう慎重に選定した。一部の壁は未加工のまま、むき出しのコンクリート壁を保存し、素朴で地に足のついた美学を強調している。一方、室内では温かみのある居心地の良い色調が心地よい対比を生み出す。

浴室は素朴な色調を基調としつつ、赤いアクセントが個性を添える。田園を見渡す浴槽と、1日中新鮮な空気を取り込む網張りの天窓が特徴となっている。

記憶とともに建設する住空間

我々は「記憶とともに建てる」ことを選んだ。既存の窓、扉、タイル、柱は修復し、新たな命が吹き込まれている。ベランダには解体された地元の家屋から回収した柱が並び、かつてそこに宿っていた記憶のノスタルジアと静かな魅力を今に伝える。

近隣の解体された寺院から移築された石柱は、今や屋外空間に堂々と佇んでいる。玄関扉さえも元の構造から再生され、その歴史を継承しているのである。

〈Kalam〉には主に、以下のマテリアルを採用した。

階段のレンガ：全体の配色と調和し、環境に配慮した選択として採用
粘土瓦：全工程で使用され、自然的かつ耐久性・持続性に優れた仕上げを実現
古家具と再生木材：地元調達および既存建物からの再利用により、温もりと個性を加えつつ、排出量削減に寄与

このプロジェクトは地元職人の雇用創出、農家支援、近隣地主への啓発をもたらした。訪問者を村の生活に近づけ、地域社会に誇りと収入を生み出している。

For twenty years, this building stood abandoned, a silent reminder of forgotten spaces and wasted potential. But every neglected structure carries hidden stories waiting to be reimagined.

A century-old granary, left untouched for over two decades, has now been thoughtfully transformed into a boutique farmhouse through architectural ingenuity and carefully chosen materials. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Western Ghats, and nestled between lush paddy fields and a serene pond, Kalame embodies rustic charm and timeless beauty.

A verandah and bathroom have been added to the existing structure, while preserving the original character of the building. Our vision was not to demolish and replace, but to revive. To transform what already existed into something purposeful, sustainable, and deeply rooted in culture and community.

The spatial layout frames serene views of the paddy fields and the pond. Openings have been positioned to allow wind to flow effortlessly through the interiors, ensuring natural cross-ventilation. The bathroom is crafted to embrace the landscape, with a bathtub placed to soak in uninterrupted paddy views. Every space has been shaped to offer comfort to guests while remaining adaptable to village life. Existing greenery has been retained for natural cooling, blending the stay seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.

The exterior colours were carefully selected to harmonise with nature. Certain walls have been left untouched, with exposed concrete plaster preserved to strengthen the raw, grounded aesthetic. Inside, warm and cozy tones create a welcoming contrast. The bathrooms celebrate rustic colour palettes, with red accents adding personality. A bathtub overlooks the paddy fields, while an open, net-covered skylight invites fresh air throughout the day.

We chose to build with memory. Existing windows, doors, tiles, and columns were restored and given new life. The verandah features columns salvaged from a dismantled local house, carrying the nostalgia and quiet charm of memories once held within them. A stone pillar from a nearby dismantled temple now stands proudly in the outdoor space. Even the main door has been revived from the original structure, carrying its legacy forward.

・Bricks have been used for the steps, complementing the overall palette and serving as an eco-friendly choice.

・Clay tiles are used throughout the project for a natural, durable, and sustainable finish.

・Old furniture and reclaimed wood were sourced locally and from the original building, reducing emissions while adding warmth and character.

Beyond walls and roofs, this project created employment for local craftsmen, supported farmers, and inspired neighbouring landowners. It brings visitors closer to village life, generating pride and income for the community.
