建築と自然が溶け合う医療空間

インド・ケララ州に建つ〈NURA〉は、旧校舎のコンクリート躯体をそのまま活用し、ランドスケープと建築を融合させることで、患者の不安を和らげる「癒やしと安らぎの空間」へと変貌させた医療施設です。

空間環境がウェルビーイングに直結する医療分野において、デザインがいかに貢献できるかを示すプロジェクトとして、インドの建築事務所 Stapatiが設計しました。

医療施設の再定義と、デザインがもたらす治癒力

〈NURA〉は、医療施設のあるべき姿を再定義するプロジェクトである。かつての校舎をそのまま活用した本計画は、実用本位のコンクリート構造物を、癒しと安らぎの空間へと変貌させるという、挑戦であると同時に大きなチャンスでもあった。

クライアントのビジョンは当初から明確であった。それは、空間環境がウェルビーイングに直接的な影響を与える医療分野においてこそ、デザインは極めて重要であるということである。

敷地がもつ記憶の継承する、既存躯体の活用

既存の地上2階建ての建物を解体、あるいは増築するのではなく、我々は既存躯体を残して新たな用途へ転用することを選択した。これにより、持続可能なアプローチを強化し、敷地がもつ歴史を尊重している。

この場所は典型的な都市中心部とは異なり、広々とした開放的な土地を備えており、デザインにおいて自然を前面に押し出す絶好の機会となった。

ランドスケープが導く、穏やかな空間体験

本プロジェクトの背骨となっているのが、ランドスケープである。Salad Dressingとの協働により、没入感のあるバイオフィリック（生命愛）な環境を創出した。来訪者は、厳選された自然のオアシスを縫うように進むゴルフカートに乗って施設へと導かれる。

この穏やかな移行プロセスにより、到着という行為そのものが心地よい自然散策へと変わるのである。敷地の一方は野生の森として自然な成長に委ねられ、もう一方はケララ州原産の薬用植物を丁寧に手入れした庭園となっており、予防医学を重視する当施設の理念を明確に裏付けている。

不安を和らげる、緑と視覚的につながる内部空間

内部空間においては、処置室や診断室を含むすべての部屋が緑の景色へと開かれており、自然が視界から消えることは決してない。この絶え間ない自然との視覚的なつながりが患者の感覚を落ち着かせ、通院時にしばしば伴う不安を和らげる役割を果たしている。

建築とアートが紡ぐ、生命の象徴

ファサードはパンチングメタル（穿孔金属）のスクリーンで覆われ、既存の構造体をより現代的で繊細な介入へと視覚的に変容させている。エントランスの吹き抜け空間には、しばしば侵略的な外来種と見なされる植物「ランタナ」を再利用して制作された、彫刻的なインスタレーションが吊り下げられている。

DNAの構造に着想を得た二重らせん状のフォルムで天井を優雅に巡るこの作品は、アート、科学、そして持続可能性の境界線を曖昧にし、身体と自然に対する当センターの深い関与を象徴している。

感覚を研ぎ澄ますマテリアルと色彩の調和

素材の選定もまた、この地にしっかりと足をつけたような感覚的な体験をさらに高めている。土壁はインテリアに温かみと質感をもたらし、ダークな床材は空間に安定感を与えつつ、外部の緑との美しいコントラストを生み出している。

さらにファサードスクリーンの色彩は、周囲の緑と絶妙に調和しながら、建物全体に温かみと安定感をもたらしている。これらの選択が相まって、自然を触覚的、視覚的、そして深く心に響く、絶え間ない存在として描き出しているのである。

臨床を超えた、新たな医療体験の創造

〈NURA〉において、診断は単なる臨床行為を超えた意味をもつ。それは、持続可能性、静寂、そして自然がもつ癒しの力への深い敬意に根ざした、より大きな体験の一部となるのである。

NURA
Location: Calicut,Kerala
NURA reimagines what a medical facility can be. Set within the shell of an old school building, this project posed both a challenge and an opportunity—to transform a utilitarian concrete structure into a space of healing and calm. The client’s vision was clear from the outset: design matters, especially in healthcare, where the environment can directly impact wellbeing.
Rather than demolish or expand the existing ground-plus-two structure, we chose to retain and repurpose it, reinforcing a sustainable approach and honouring the site’s history. The location, unlike typical urban centres, offered generous open land—an invitation to bring nature to the foreground of the design.
Landscape became the spine of the project. In collaboration with Salad Dressing, we developed an immersive, biophilic environment. Guests arrive via a golf cart that winds through curated pockets of wilderness—a gentle transition that turns arrival into a nature walk. One side of the site has been allowed to grow into a wild forest, while the other features a carefully tended garden of indigenous medicinal plants from Kerala, reinforcing the facility’s emphasis on preventive medicine.
Inside, every room—including procedure and diagnostic spaces—opens out to green vistas, ensuring that nature is never out of sight. This continuous visual connection calms the senses and eases the anxiety often associated with medical visits.
The facade is wrapped in a perforated metal screen, visually transforming the structure into a more contemporary and sensitive intervention. Suspended in the entrance volume is a sculptural installation crafted from reclaimed lantana, a material often considered invasive. Twisting gracefully across the ceiling in a double helix form inspired by the structure of DNA, the piece blurs the boundaries between art, science, and sustainability—signifying the centre’s deeper engagement with the body and nature.
The material palette further enhances this grounded, sensory experience—earth plasters bring warmth and texture to the interiors, while dark flooring anchors the space and contrasts the greenery outside.The color of the facade scren subtly complements the surrounding greenery while adding a warm, grounding presence to the structure.=
Together, these choices frame nature as a constant presence—tactile, visual, and deeply felt.
At NURA, diagnostics become more than clinical. They become part of a larger experience—one rooted in sustainability, serenity, and a deep respect for the healing power of nature.
