タイ・チェンマイのメーオン地区に建つ〈キアンカイ・ホーム＆スタジオ（Khiankhai Home&Studio）〉は、タイを拠点とする設計事務所シャー・メイカー（Sher Maker）が手がけた住宅兼スタジオです。
本建築の最大の特徴は、竣工をゴールとせず、住人の歩みと共に変化し成長していく「未完の住まい」である点にあります。

住人と共に進化し続ける環境としての住宅
住宅とは、そこに住む人々の絶え間ない進化のために創り出された環境の1つであり、その思考、感情、そして身体そのものを包み込むものである。したがって、住宅は住人と共に成長していくべきものである。「家を建てる」という言葉は、住人が共に成長する覚悟をもっている住まいこそに、最もふさわしい表現である。

地形の起伏と既存の樹木を取り込む設計
バルコニーや通路を含めて260m²の広さをもつこの住宅は、チェンマイのメーオン地区に位置し、タートン地区にある再生木材の調達源に近い場所にある。この住宅のデザインは、人間の本質と、絶えず変化する環境に密接に調和している。
敷地の自然な起伏に沿って広がるユニークな間取りを採用しており、片側は村の道路に面し、もう片側は田園地帯へと開けているのが特徴となっている。クラビー・クワ、コイ、トンクワオといった既存の樹木に加え、建設前に所有者が発見した大きなパヨムの木も相まって、これらの樹木は住宅環境の不可欠な一部となっている。

再生木材で構築する住空間
地形が高台にあるため、1階の構造は擁壁の役割を果たしており、既存の木々がつくり出す自然な日陰の範囲内に建物の高さを収めるべく、土地と密接に一体化されている。2階は機能的な居住空間であり、キッチン、リビングルーム、バルコニー、寝室が配置されている。この階は、掴む、踏む、座る、眠るといった日々の活動を通じて、人体と最も直接的な物理的相互作用をもたらす場所である。
構造部材と環境要素の両方において、再生木材が主要な建築材料として活用されているが、これは人間に優しい特性と、周辺地域での入手しやすさを理由に選定されたものである。デザインはシンプルさと明快さを目指し、地元の職人が基本的な道具だけで作業できるように配慮するとともに、あらゆる不完全さを、人間という存在の不完全さを示す証として受け入れている。

地域素材がもたらす風土とのつながり
再生木材だけでなく、レンガや屋根瓦といった他の基本的な建築資材も地元で調達されており、近隣環境とのつながりや、入手しやすい工業資材の活用がさらに強調されている。この住宅は、「住まいとは、周辺地域の基本的な素材環境を反映し、不必要な複雑さを排して建設や修繕を行う職人技とのつながりを維持すべきである」という思想を体現している。

住人が紡ぐ「未完の住まい」と建築家の役割
この住宅は当初から所有者自身によって建てられ、時間の経過とともに、完成という明確な区切りを設けることなく使い続けられてきた。これこそが住宅と呼ばれる建築のあり方であり、所有者が一歩ずつ、足りないものを徐々に補いながらつくり上げていく空間である。
ここにおける建築家の役割は、単に所有者のアイデアを確認し、彼らが自ら決定できるように代替案を提示することに過ぎない。

A home is one of the environments created for the constant evolution of its inhabitants, encompassing their thoughts, emotions, and physical being. Therefore, a home should grow in tandem with its residents. The term “building a home” is most fitting for a dwelling where the owners are ready to grow together.
This 260-square-meter house, including the balcony and pathways, is located in the Mae On district of Chiang Mai, close to a source of reclaimed wood in the Tha Ton area. The design of the house is closely aligned with human nature and its ever-changing environment. The house has a unique layout, spreading out along the natural contours of the land. It faces the village road on one side and opens up to fields on the other. The presence of existing trees, including species like “krabie kwa,” “koi,” and “thongkwaow,” combined with a significant “payom” tree that the owners found before constructing the house, has made these trees an essential part of the house’s environment.
Due to the elevated terrain, the ground floor structure serves as a retaining wall, closely integrated with the original land to maintain the house’s height within the natural shading of the existing trees. The second floor is the functional living space, housing the kitchen, living room, balcony, and bedrooms. This level presents the most direct physical interaction with the human body, involving activities such as grasping, stepping, sitting, and sleeping. To promote the use of reclaimed wood as the primary building material, both for structural elements and environmental components, it was chosen for its human-friendly characteristics and easy accessibility within the surrounding area. The design aimed for simplicity and clarity, allowing local craftsmen to work with basic tools, and embracing any imperfections as a testament to the imperfect nature of humanity.
In addition to reclaimed wood, other basic building materials such as bricks and roofing tiles were sourced locally, further emphasizing the connection to the immediate environment and the use of readily available industrial materials. This house reflects the idea that a home should present the environment of basic materials in the surrounding area and maintain a connection to the craftsmanship skills that can build and repair without unnecessary complexity.
This house was “built” by its owners from the beginning, and over time, they have used it without a clear boundary marking its completion. This is the architecture known as a “home,” a space where the owners gradually add what is missing, one step at a time. The architect’s role is simply to confirm their ideas and offer alternative directions for them to decide upon
