LOGLINE
Wim Wenders’ new film explores the work of one of the most influential contemporary architects, Pritzker Prize-winner Peter Zumthor. The immersive approach in 3D presents his architecture through the eyes of visitors, users, inhabitants, or craftspeople. The viewers experience the buildings, as if they could walk around in them on their own, leaving them with an understanding how much architecture influences our perception of the world and how it shapes our lives.
SYNOPSIS
Four-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Wim Wenders explores the work and philosophy of Pritzker Prize-winning Swiss architect Peter Zumthor in an immersive documentary about the powerful relationship between people and the places they visit, work in, or inhabit. Filmed over more than 14 years and captured through cutting-edge 3D cinematography, the film invites audiences to experience Zumthor’s architectural originals through the eyes of visitors, users, inhabitants, or craftspeople – allowing them to walk through these spaces themselves. Journeying from intimate private homes to the monumental new David Geffen Galleries at LACMA in Los Angeles, FROM INSIDE OUT reveals Zumthor’s devotion to craftsmanship and materiality, combined with his profound sense of place. Wenders shows that architecture is not simply about buildings, but about how they shape our emotions, memories and understanding of the world. You’ll walk out with a new understanding of what buildings can mean to you.
LONG SYNOPSIS
In his new film, 4-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Wim Wenders, (PERFECT DAYS, PINA, SALT OF THE EARTH, BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB) explores the work and philosophy of one of the most influential contemporary architects, Pritzker Prize winner Peter Zumthor. The immersive approach in 3D presents Zumthor’s work not just through the eyes of its architect, but largely through the eyes of visitors, users, inhabitants, or craftspeople, enabling the viewers to experience the Swiss architect’s unique buildings, as if they could walk around in them on their own. They understand how they’re made from a profound sense of place and a radical preference for craftsmanship.
The collaboration between Zumthor and Wenders began in 2012 with a short film for the Venice Architecture Biennale, NOTES FROM A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ARCHITECT, which inspired and started this feature-length project. It was, from the beginning, planned to be a long-term observation, in the end it was spanning 14 years. The shooting led to all of Zumthor’s key works, to some of them also in different seasons, from the Witchcraft Memorial in Vardø in Norway, high up North, beyond the Arctic Circle, to his famous Thermal Baths in Vals in Switzerland, or the Kolumba museum in Cologne as well as to the nearby Bruder Klaus Chapel in the Eifel Mountains. The film accompanied several projects from conception through construction to finishing, like the Secular Retreat in Devonshire, the monumental David Geffen Galleries of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, or the new building of the Beyeler Foundation in Basel. Each time, the architecture reveals a one-of-a-kind building, an architectural original inseparable from its surroundings and created for its very own specific purpose. The film lets us understand how much architecture influences our perception of the world and how it shapes our entire lives. As Peter Zumthor says: “We’re all coming from houses.”
DIRECTOR’S NOTE – Wim Wenders
“We all live in houses.”
We call them ‘homes’, because they protect us and link us to our family and to our history. Our memories are stored in them… They help us establish our biography and form our identity. We eat and sleep and dream in houses, we grow up and raise our children in them. We go to work in offices, enjoy art in museums and pray in churches. We spend a lot of our time inside houses. They largely define the conditions of our lives. Yet, most of us don’t know much about buildings, houses or homes, let alone about ‘architecture’. Still, we mostly just take it for granted. I wanted to change that with this film.FROM INSIDE OUT
wants to sharpen our sense of place, enlarge our sensorium for houses or ‘homes’, so that we’re more aware how architecture influences us and shapes ourselves and for our societies. This film is not trying to teach you anything. Instead, it offers you a sensual experience that will allow you to simply take in a few basic things about architecture. Your guide in this adventure of discovery is Peter Zumthor, one of the great living architects of our time.
He is highly selective in his choice of projects; and once committed, he takes his time, so he can improve the future building in the construction process, like writers, painters, composers or filmmakers, in my case. Like us, he believes that anything you produce can be perfected as you are making it.

WIM WENDERS | WRITER AND DIRECTOR
Wim Wenders (born 1945 in Düsseldorf) gained international recognition as a major protagonist of the New German Cinema of the 1970s. Today, he is considered one of the most prominent figures in contemporary world cinema. The work of the screenwriter, director, producer, photographer, and author includes multiple award-winning feature and documentary films, photo exhibitions presented worldwide, as well as numerous photo books, film books and collections of essays. He lives and works with his wife Donata Wenders in the countryside near Berlin.
After graduating school, Wim Wenders began to study medicine and philosophy before moving to Paris in 1966 “to fulfill his dream and become a painter”. Alongside his apprenticeship in the studio of the graphic artist and engraver Johnny Friedlaender, he spent his afternoons and then increasingly his nights at the Cinémathèque Française, where he watched hundreds of films, most of them introduced by Henri Langlois. This “crash course in the history of cinema” became an important stage in his education in which Wenders began to see film as an “extension of painting by other means”.
Wenders began his career as a filmmaker in autumn 1967 when he enrolled at the newly founded University of Television and Film (HFF) in Munich. Parallel to his studies at the HFF, he also worked as a film critic from 1967 until the early 1970s. It was during this time that he made his first short films, some of them outside of film school. Immediately after graduating with the feature film SUMMER IN THE CITY (1970), he and fifteen other directors and writers founded the Filmverlag der Autoren, in 1971, a co-operative of young German auteur filmmakers who thus took production, rights management and distribution of their films into
their own hands.Film Work
After THE GOALIE’S ANXIETY AT THE PENALTY KICK (1971), his first feature-length film, Wenders made the road movie trilogy ALICE IN THE CITIES (1974), WRONG MOVE (1974) and KINGS OF THE ROAD (1975), in which the protagonists try to come to terms with their rootlessness in postwar Germany, among other things.
In 1976, Wim Wenders founded the film production company Road Movies. Since then, the Berlin based company has produced and co-produced numerous arthouse films by Wim Wenders and various other directors, with a particular focus on creative documentaries, and productions in 3D.
Today, Road Movies is managed by Marc Schmidheiny and Wim Wenders.
His international breakthrough came with THE AMERICAN FRIEND (1977). Since then, Wenders has worked in Europe, the USA, Latin America and Asia and was honoured with numerous awards for his films at festivals around the world, including the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival for THE STATE OF THINGS (1982), the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Festival and the BAFTA Award for PARIS, TEXAS (1984), the Award for Best Director in Cannes for WINGS OF DESIRE (1987), the Grand Jury Prize for FARAWAY, SO CLOSE! in Cannes (1993) and the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival for THE MILLION DOLLAR HOTEL (2000). His documentaries BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB (1999), PINA (2011) and THE SALT OF THE EARTH (2014) were each nominated for an Oscar.
SUBMERGENCE, starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and James McAvoy, was released in the cinema in 2018, as was POPE FRANCIS – A MAN OF HIS WORD, a documentary film featuring Pope Francis.
His two most recent films had both their world premieres at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023: ANSELM, his documentary in 3D about Anselm Kiefer, and his Japanese feature film PERFECT DAYS, for which the lead actor Kōji Yakusho was honored with the award for Best Actor. PERFECT DAYS became one of Wenders’ internationally most successful films and was nominated for an Oscar in the International Feature Film category in 2024.
In autumn 2012, Wim Wenders and his wife Donata established the Wim Wenders Stiftung in Düsseldorf, his hometown, a charitable foundation to create a framework to bring together and to preserve Wim Wenders’ cinematic, photographic, and literary lifework and to make it permanently accessible to the public.
The Foundation is also dedicated to promoting young talent in the field of innovative filmmaking through the Wim Wenders Grant awarded in cooperation with the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW. It is also involved in film education since it initiated the film education project ‘A European School of Seeing’ for school students.
In 2014, the Wim Wenders Foundation began to digitally restore Wim Wenders’ films and has so far restored 23 works at the highest standard. In 2018, the 4K-restored version of WINGS OF DESIRE was re-released and since July 2024, the 4K-restored version of the cult film PARIS, TEXAS, featuring an all-star cast including Harry Dean Stanton, Nastassja Kinski and Dean Stockwell, can be seen again theatrically worldwide.
The Wim Wenders Foundation is managed by Claire Brunel and Hella Wenders.

Maxine Goedicke is a Berlin-based film editor, focusing on feature documentaries. Her most recent work includes Wim Wenders’ FROM INSIDE OUT (2026) and SIRI HUSTVEDT – DANCE AROUND THE SELF (2026), for which she was nominated for Best Editing at the 2026 German Film Awards.
Her long-standing collaboration with Wim Wenders began as an assistant editor on PINA (2011).
At the age of 23, she edited the Oscar-nominated THE SALT OF THE EARTH (2014), which received the Prix Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by Pope Francis – A MAN OF HIS WORD (2018) and ANSELM (2023), both of which premiered at Cannes.
Goedicke has also worked closely with director Sonia Kennebeck for over 10 years, editing NATIONAL BIRD (2016), which premiered at the Berlinale and received an Emmy nomination, as well as ENEMIES OF THE STATE (TIFF 2020) and REALITY WINNER (SXSW 2021).
With Marten Persiel, Goedicke edited two hybrid documentaries. THIS AIN’T CALIFORNIA (2012) was her first feature as an editor. The film won the Dialogue en perspective Prize at the Berlinale in 2012, a German Camera Award promotional prize for editing, and the Special Jury Prize at the Nashville Film Festival. Their collaboration continued with EVERYTHING WILL CHANGE (2021).
DONATA WENDERS | SECOND UNIT DIRECTOR
Donata Wenders was born in Berlin in 1965. She studied film and theatre in Berlin and Stuttgart and began her artistic career as a cinematographer for feature films and documentaries. Since 1995 she has been working as a freelance photographer. Her images are characterised by a classical, mostly black and white visual language. With photography’s digital transformation, Donata Wenders has been developing audiovisual short film installations since 2015. This fusion of photography and moving image led her back to her roots and also marked an evolution in genre.
KAPPELER – ZUMTHOR | COMPOSERS
Vera Kappeler: Piano
Peter Conradin Zumthor: Drums“Weirdly beautiful, and wonderfully unpretentious” — as one music critic summed it up.
Since the beginning of their long-standing collaboration, Kappeler-Zumthor have pursued their own singular path, shaped by distinctive sound combinations, reduction, precision, childlike playfulness, and humour, as well as by darker, more abyssal, and melancholic undertones. Their music resists categorization, drawing inspiration from sources beyond the purely musical as well.Early on, the duo began working across artistic disciplines: composing music for theatre, setting texts, poems, and films to music, and performing in unusual spaces such as churches, caverns, dams, and small chambers. They have also created cross-media works at the intersection of visual art and music.
Kappeler-Zumthor have released two CDs: Babylon Suite (2014, ECM Records) and Herd (2021, Intakt Records). With their programs, they have performed on countless stages, both in Switzerland and far beyond.
VERA KAPPELER
Vera Kappeler was born in Basel in 1974 and grew up in the playroom, surrounded by radio, cassette recorder, piano, and many small instruments. In the youth orchestra she played xylophone and discovered her love for folk music and songs from around the world. She was also a child of the 1980s, loved the aesthetics and pop music of that era, and played it back on piano and the Yamaha DX7.
Later she discovered the great “classical piano repertoire” and jazz — she studied at the Winterthur Conservatory (now the Zurich University of the Arts) and has since taught piano, among other places, at the jazz department of the Lucerne School of Music and at the Kantonsschule Küsnacht near Zurich.
In her solo programs “Vera Kappeler Plays Paul Burkhard,” “Grandmother’s Grand Piano,” and “M:Monk,” she combines her interest in old chansons, simple dance and dinner music, and old music automatons with her penchant for sound experiments and idiosyncratic arrangements.
The pianist and harmonium player also regularly performs and records with various other projects. She lives in Haldenstein, near Chur.
PETER CONRADIN ZUMTHOR
This self-taught drummer, composer, and artist works 100% as a freelancer and performs on national and international stages with great independence, focusing almost exclusively on his own projects. His work ranges from composing for himself and others, solo concerts, theatre music, film scores, world premieres of new music, radio plays, children’s programs, sound installations, video works, and conceptual projects at the intersection of music and visual art—to setting literature to music and pure improvisation. In his 45-minute piece “things are going down,” Zumthor plays the piano while a piano tuner lowers the tension of the strings. His project “Glocken – con sordino,” in which Zumthor prepares church bells, has been performed dozens of times, from the Lucerne Festival to St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna. He has served as musical director on multiple occasions for music theatre productions by Thom Luz. As an artist, he regularly creates works; his objects, installations, paintings, and videos have been exhibited and sold on numerous occasions.
LAURENT PETITGAND | COMPOSER
Laurent Petitgand is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter, and actor. Raised in a family of nine children, he sang in a religious choir between the ages of 7 and 14 before pursuing a self-taught artistic career — first alone, then within various bands.
With his musical group “Dick Tracy,” he composed his first film score for Wim Wenders in 1985, for the film TOKYO-GA, which marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration with the director: WINGS OF DESIRE – CIRCUS MUSIC, FARAWAY, SO CLOSE, BEYOND THE CLOUDS (with Michelangelo Antonioni), THE SALT OF THE EARTH (a journey with Sebastião Salgado), and POPE FRANCIS: A MAN OF HIS WORD, among others.
Alongside writing and performing his own songs, he has composed for theatre and dance, notably for Angelin Preljocaj’s ballets.
He wrote the score for Paul Auster’s final film, THE INNER LIFE OF MARTIN FROST, and performs regularly in concert.
