〈SOSO coffee〉はベトナム・ホーチミン市内にある新築マンションの1階に計画されたカフェである。富裕層のベトナム人や外国人が多く住む、住宅開発が進むエリアの中にあり、高層マンションから低層のヴィラタイプまでさまざまな住居が建ち並んでいる。
クライアントのベトナム人オーナーは日本をこよなく愛し、今回のカフェの内装にも日本らしさを取り入れたいとのことであった。ただ日本らしいと言ってもいわゆる「和風」ではなく、どちらかといえば日本人の精神性やそれにもとづく空間表現の美しさに焦点を当てることが、クライアントの要望であると理解した。
店舗スペースはトイレや階段部分を除くと40㎡ほどのコンパクトなスペースである。席数を有効に確保しようとすれば、カウンターを壁際に寄せ、残りを客席にするのが定石ではあるが、効率性だけを重視して詰め込んだプランではなく、近くを流れるサイゴン川のようにゆったりとおおらかな空間のほうがここにはふさわしいと考えた。
そこでカフェの中心に大きな楕円形のカウンターを大胆に配置し、その周囲の余ったスペースにテーブルを置くことにした。店内に入るとまず入口付近まで迫るカウンター越しに注文をし、そこから楕円に沿って左右に別れて着席する一連の動きが自然と流れるようなプランを考えた。
カウンターは現場打ちのコンクリートで一体型に成形されている。側面のみ研ぎ出して骨材の砕石を露出させ、天板面とのエッジで仕上げを分けている。本来コンクリートのもつ力強さや荒々しさが、家具に施すような丁寧な仕上げをすることによって洗練された柔らかな表情になった。壁に沿って設けられたベンチにはテーブルと一体となった皮付きの丸太が木立のように並び、脚元は真鍮のシリンダーで支えられ、すっきりしたシャープな印象を与える。
家具や壁面に使用された木は白、グレー、ブラウン、黒の4色に塗り分けられ、木目が見える程度の薄塗りをして木の表情を残している。
丸太に嵌め込まれたテープライトが壁に向かって光を放ち、反射光が店内を優しく照らす。天井は無数の孔がランダムに空けられたパネルで覆われ、孔から漏れた淡い光によって白い雪に包まれたような、また夜には満点の星空が広がったような店内となり、1日の中で異なる表情をもつ空間となった。
全体の色味を淡く、それぞれが主張しすぎることのないような素材を選定し、間接照明によって雰囲気をいっそう柔らかくすることで、優しい空間に仕上がったと感じている。（川口淳志）

A coffee shop focusing on the beauty of Japanese spirituality and spatial expression
〈SOSO coffee〉is a café located on the first floor of a newly built condominium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It is located in an area where many wealthy Vietnamese and foreigners live and where housing developments are underway, with various residences ranging from high-rise condominiums to low-rise villas.
The client, a Vietnamese owner, is a great admirer of Japan and wanted to incorporate a Japanese touch into the cafe’s interior design. However, I understood that the client wanted to focus on the beauty of Japanese spirituality and spatial expression based on it, rather than the so-called “Japanese style.”
The store space is a compact 40 m², excluding the restroom and stairway. To secure the number of seats effectively, it is standard practice to put the counter close to the wall and use the rest of the space for seating. Still, we thought a spacious and generous space like the Saigon River flowing nearby would be more appropriate for this space, rather than a crammed plan that only emphasizes efficiency.
Therefore, we boldly placed a large oval counter in the center of the cafe and placed tables in the extra space around it. The plan was designed so that when customers enter the café, the first place their orders over the counter that approaches the entrance, and from there, they naturally move left and right along the oval to be seated.
The counter is made of cast-in-place concrete and molded into a single piece. Only the sides are polished to expose the crushed stone aggregate, and the edges are finished separately from the top surface. The original concrete’s strength and roughness are given a refined and soft expression by the careful finishing that is applied to the furniture. The benches along the wall are lined with barked logs integrated with the table like a grove, and the legs are supported by brass cylinders, giving a clean and sharp impression.
The wood used for the furniture and walls is painted in four different colors: white, gray, brown, and black, with a thin coat of paint to show the wood’s grain and preserve the expression of the wood.
Tape lights inlaid in the logs emit light toward the walls, and the reflected light gently illuminates the store. The ceiling is covered with panels with countless randomly punched holes, and the pale light leaking through the holes makes the store look like it is covered in white snow, or at night like it is filled with a starry sky.
The overall color palette is light, and we selected materials not to be too assertive. Using indirect lighting to soften the atmosphere further, we feel that we have created a gentle space. (Atsushi Kawaguchi)
