広島市中心部に建つ、病院をコンバージョンしたホテルである。
広島を含む、瀬戸内海の美しい海や島々を巡る旅は、海外の旅行者の間でも定着してきている。このホテルでは、ローカルでディープな人や場所の情報を発見できたり、そのためのきっかけを提供し、旅人とローカルを交差させ、その交差点から旅を「分岐」させていくことを目指している。
そのためホテル名も文字通り、瀬戸内周遊の旅の「分岐路」になることを込めて〈KIRO HIROSHIMA〉と名付けられた。
共用部では、ラウンジとバーとして生まれ変わったリハビリ用プールのプールサイドとしての骨格は残し、新しいホテルの使い方に呼応できるよう、プールの底にあたる床のレベルに対し新たに操作を加えた。
プールサイドに座るという、プールの時にあった身体行為、痕跡を残したまま、新しい空間の機能に重ね合わせている。
旅人には積極的にラウンジやバーに出てきて交流をしてほしいので、客室はできるだけコンパクトにしている。
一方で、さまざまな旅行客にリーチするため、客室タイプはロフトなど複数人の友人、家族連れ、靴を脱ぐジャパニーズスタイルなども用意している。（田中裕之）
A hotel at the crossroads of travel, reborn with the traces of a hospital
Located in the center of Hiroshima City, in a former hospital building that has been converted into a hotel. Including Hiroshima, many travelers come to see the beautiful Seto Inland Sea and islands.
We think that to make the most of your journey, the most important thing is not to have extravagant amenities and facilities but to have interaction with local people and find information about the ‘real’ Hiroshima.
Therefore, we offer the chance for travelers to interact with local people. That interaction may be present a crossroad on your journey. We are aiming to be a hotel that offers the chance for people to take many discover many different paths to take on their travels.
The hotel’s name, KIRO HIROSHIMA, evokes this purpose – “kiro” being Japanese for crossroads.
The 3rd Floor Pool
To respect the history of the building and seize the chance we have been given, we have taken a historical approach to its restoration. Paying close attention to the history of the building, it could be said that it has been born again as a future building incorporating elements of its past.
What was once a rehabilitation pool on the 3rd floor has been reborn as a lounge and bar. The pool remains. However, the surface and bottom have been improved to suit a modern hotel.
Through this work, we have been able to keep the original skeleton of the pool intact while resurrecting it as a new space.
As the poolside was original of great importance to the room, we have kept traces of its history while developing the new space. Using the existing tiles and large entrance, we have tried as hard as possible to maintain the original atmosphere of the room.
This is a place where travelers can encounter the local, real Hiroshima.
We want travelers to actively come out to the lounges and bars to socialize, so we keep the rooms as compact as possible.
This hotel has different types of rooms to accommodate many types of guests. For example, a loft-style room can accommodate many people, including friends and family. You can also take off your shoes and experience a Japanese room like Japanese. (Hiroyuki Tanaka)
