建物は駅前の商店街にほど近い築30年、建坪16坪ほどの小さな木造2階建てアパート。間口3.6m、奥行約12m、1・2階合わせて6戸の典型的な1人暮らし用アパートの1階部分3戸を家族3人が暮らすための改修計画である。
約16坪の限られた空間の中で「妻のアトリエ」「仕事で使う本や資料、布地や糸などを収める壁面収納」が求められ、コンパクトで心地よい「職住一体の空間づくり」がテーマとなった。
既存の水回り位置を生かしながらキッチン、トイレなどの水回り機能を北面に、建物の一番奥にあたる東側に寝室と将来の子供部屋を配した。またアトリエと皆が集まる場を一体にすることで、仕事をしながらでも家族と会話ができ、小さいながらもおおらかで無駄のない空間構成となった。
既存の開口部を最大限に活かすことで光と風をやさしく取り込み、新しく植え直した庭の緑と温かな木の質感に包まれたこの家は、設計当初から思い描いていた、新しいけれどどこか懐かしく、遠い過去の記憶を呼び起こすような素朴で穏やかな空間に生まれ変わった。（今泉隆史）
Living with a small atelier renovated from an apartment for living alone
The building is a 30-year-old, small two-story wooden apartment of about 53m², located near the shopping street in front of the station. This is a renovation project for three units on the first floor of a typical one-person apartment building with a frontage of 3.6meters and a depth of approximately 12meters, with six units on the first and second floors, for a family of three. This renovation project was designed to accommodate a family of three living in three units on the first floor.
Within the limited space of approximately 53m², a “wife’s studio” and “wall storage for books, materials, fabrics, and threads” used for work were required. The theme was to create a compact, comfortable workspace and relaxation space.
The kitchen and toilet are located on the north side of the building, while the bedroom and future children’s room are located on the east side, at the far end of the building. The atelier and the gathering space were integrated to allow for conversation with the family while working, resulting in a small but generous and lean space configuration. (Takashi Imaizumi)
