敷地は手つかずの隣地が特段の境もなく続いていて、住宅地にもかかわらず山裾のような場所だった。その山の斜面を受けとめるように、山の緑に向き合うように、変形L字型の平屋を雑木の枝張りの下に差し入れた。家の重心は、Lの字が囲む山（庭）に定まった。
L字の両辺にかかる切妻の半分を室内にあて、用途に合わせて細かくきざんだ。そしてもう半分を外部の縁側に。屋根を片持ちにすることで外性が強まった。各部屋への出入りにはここを通る。十分に広いので通るだけではない居場所にもなる。むしろ各部屋は縁側と合わせてやっと相応の広さになるとも言える。日常生活に否応なく外環境が入り込む。本来の内部を外部化した。
この拡幅された縁側は中間領域といえばその通りだが、内と外の緩衝帯というのではない。部屋の中にまで山（庭）の外環境を浸透させる触媒のような役割を負っている。縁側にいても部屋にいても意識は家の重心の方に向かう。どこにいても外で暮らしているようだ。
ところで山（庭）に立つ落葉性の雑木は夏には葉を茂らせて部屋に深い陰を落とし、冬にはすべてを地面に落として日の光を部屋の奥にまで届ける。家の重心に位置する木々は可変する「屋根」でもあったのだ。（矢部達也）
A house with a porch that receives the adjacent grove of mixed trees
The site is surrounded by unspoiled neighboring land without any particular boundary, and despite being a residential area, it is like the foothills of a mountain. As if to catch the slope of the mountain, a deformed L-shaped one-story house was inserted under the overhanging branches of the trees, facing the greenery of the mountain. The center of gravity of the house was set on the mountain (garden) surrounded by the letter “L.”
Half of the gable ends on both sides of the L-shape are used for the interior, and the other half is used for the exterior porch. The other half is used for the exterior porch. The cantilevered roof strengthens the external character of the house. The entrance and exit to each room are here. It is wide enough so that it is not only a place to pass through but also a place to stay. It can be said that each room is only as large as its size when combined with the porch. The outside environment enters into daily life. The original interior is made external.
This expanded veranda is an intermediate area, but it is not a buffer zone between the inside and the outside. It is a catalyst that allows the outside environment of the mountain (garden) to penetrate into the room. Whether you are on the porch or in your room, your consciousness is directed toward the center of gravity of the house. It is as if we live outside, no matter where we are. (Tatsuya Yabe)
