沖縄県の東海岸の海が一望できる敷地に、自身の住宅兼アトリエを建てた。
近年、沖縄では住宅の均質化が進んでほかの地方都市とも変わらない街並みが増え、辛うじて地域性を残しているのは植物と空、海くらいに感じられる。本州仕様の省エネや高気密高断熱の価値観に流され、風の通る開放的な空間はなくなり、周りをコンクリートで固め、小さい窓を閉じ、空調の効いた快適な室内空間をもつ住宅に変わってきている。夏の盛りは外にいても風の抜ける庭の木陰は心地良い。この住宅でも、そんな人間的な快適さを感じる空間をつくりたいと考えた。
敷地は沖縄県本島南部の集落の外れにあり、山から続く傾斜地で、南側に海を一望できる周辺を緑に囲まれた場所にある。北側に山を削ってつくられた道路が通り、山から続く敷地は道路より少し高くなっている。プライバシーの確保と山の記憶を残すため、土地の形状にはなるべく手を加えないよう配置計画を行った。
アプローチは、敷地高低差と植物、建物の配置を利用し、アトリエと住宅の隙間を回り込むようにすることで、住宅への視線は遮られ、海へと視線が抜けていく。また、内部の活動を伺うように来訪者がいったん立ち止まり、むやみな侵入を緩やかに拒む結界をつくった。住宅とアトリエを繋ぐナー（前庭）は大きな陰が覆い、来訪者の対応から子供の遊び場、外での食事、ワークショップやイベントのスペースと、玄関の役目から活動の場まで多目的な空間となる。内部は、外と連続した開放的で風の抜ける陰の空間とし、子供たちの駆け回る大きな木陰のような快適さと、この地の伝統や精神性を再構築した沖縄の現代建築を目指した。（五十嵐敏恭）
Residence and studio with a modern reconstruction of life in the subtropics
I built my own house and studio on a site overlooking the ocean on the east coast of Okinawa Prefecture.
In recent years, the homogenization of housing in Okinawa has led to an increase in townscapes that are no different from those in other regional cities, and the plants, sky, and sea are the only things that barely retain any regional character. The open, breezy spaces have disappeared, replaced by houses with concrete surroundings, small closed windows, and comfortable, air-conditioned interior spaces. In the height of summer, it is pleasant to be outside in the shade of a tree in a breezy garden. In this house, we also wanted to create a space where people could feel such human comfort.
The site is located on the outskirts of a village in the southern part of the main island of Okinawa Prefecture, on a slope leading down from the mountain, surrounded by greenery with a view of the ocean to the south. A road carved out of the mountain runs along the northern side of the site, and the site leading up from the mountain is slightly higher than the road. In order to ensure privacy and preserve the memory of the mountain, the site was laid out with as minor modifications as possible to the shape of the land.
The approach to the house is designed to go around the gap between the atelier and the house, taking advantage of the difference in elevation of the site, the plants, and the layout of the building. Visitors pause to listen to the activities inside, creating a boundary that gently prevents any unintentional intrusion. A large shade covers the ner (vestibule) connecting the house and the atelier, making it a versatile space, from serving as an entrance to a place for activities, such as a place for visitors, a playground for children, an outside dining area, and a space for workshops and events. The interior is an open, breezy, shaded space that is continuous with the outside. The goal was to create a comfortable, large, shaded space for children to run around and a contemporary Okinawan architecture that recaptures the traditions and spirituality of the region.
