「過去と現代を結ぶ拠点」をコンセプトとして、箱根仙石原の閑静な森の中に誕生した1棟貸し切り別荘〈AKNOT HAKONE〉。ミッドセンチュリーのデザインで建てられた建築に、再び命を宿すためにこのプロジェクトは開始された。
その地となる箱根は、五街道の1つ東海道に沿った温泉地で旅の疲れを癒やす場として古くから親しまれ、後にはその自然豊かな土地柄から、絶景と名所を訪ねる国際的な観光地として賑わった。現代も日本を代表する観光地として、人々から愛され続けている。
〈AKNOT HAKONE〉は、このような箱根の伝統的な旅人の歴史と豊かで美しい自然を、現代の生活様式と融合させ、当時の建築家たちが夢想したであろうモダニズム建築のオリジナリティを受け継いだリノベーションを施した。
45°ずつ回転していく建築プランはまるで森と共生するかのように、朝から夜までの1日を屋内に居ながらも自然の力が人々の心身を癒す。そして、家の中心のスペースとなるリビングの大窓からは、箱根の名所である大涌谷を一望でき、その雄大さは圧巻だ。
また、建築された当時でも再現可能な家具・建材を用いてデザインし、過去の異文化が現代と重なり合うことで、今を生きる人々にとって新しい価値を生み出せることを体現した。
日本の古き良きものを、現代人が触れて、嗜む機会は乏しい。〈AKNOT HAKONE〉では、徒然に過ぎゆく日々の中で、ひとときの限りある休息を、日本の文化や古雅な美術品と共に過ごすことで「新たな発見をする場」となり、訪れるすべてのゲストの記憶に残る空間を提供することを目指している。（末松優一）
A villa renovation that blends history and nature with modern lifestyles
“AKNOT HAKONE,” a one-unit vacation home in the quiet forest of Sengokuhara, Hakone, was created under the concept of “a base to connect the past with the present,” and the project was initiated to give life once again to the mid-century design of the building.
Hakone, the site of this project, is a hot spring resort along the Tokaido Highway, one of the Five Routes to Japan, and has long been a popular place to relieve travelers’ fatigue. Today, it continues to be loved by people as one of Japan’s representative tourist destinations.
“AKNOT HAKONE” blends the history of Hakone’s traditional travelers and its rich and beautiful nature with modern lifestyles. It has also been renovated with the originality of modernist architecture that architects of the time would have dreamed of.
The architectural plan, which rotates by 45°, is as if in symbiosis with the forest, allowing the power of nature to heal people’s bodies and souls. At the same time, they remain indoors throughout the day from morning to night. The large window in the living room, the house’s central space, overlooks Owakudani Valley, one of Hakone’s most famous landmarks, and the grandeur of the view is breathtaking.
In addition, the design uses furniture and building materials that could be reproduced even during construction, embodying how different past cultures can overlap with the present to create new values for people living in the present.
Today, there are few opportunities for people to experience and enjoy the good old things of Japan. “AKNOT HAKONE” aims to provide a place where guests can ‘discover new things’ by spending a moment of rest amid the passing days with Japanese culture and elegant works of art and to provide a space that will remain in the memories of all visitors.
