北海道を拠点とする鞄作家が東京に新たな拠点を構えるために、築20年・地上4階建ての建物を取得した。建物は私鉄の小さな駅の近く、個人商店が軒を連ねる街の一角に位置する。
前所有者が建築家とともに完成させたこの建物は、敷地中央に設けられた外階段を介して各階へアクセスする特徴的な構成をもち、トップライトからの自然光がコンクリートの質感を際立たせる。施主はこの建築の個性に共感し、新たな拠点とするための改修を決めた。
本計画では、既存建築の構成要素との対話から、新旧の要素がそれぞれの自立性を保ちながらも調和する空間の実現を目指した。
1階は街と繋がる作家活動の場へと再構成した。道路側にはギャラリーを、中庭を挟んだ敷地奥にはアトリエを配置。新たに設けた2枚の壁が、通りから敷地の奥への流れを生む。ギャラリーの長辺の壁が視線を敷地の奥へと誘い、アトリエの短辺の壁がその流れを受け止める。この直交する2枚の壁が中庭を挟んだ空間を1つの場としてまとめている。
ギャラリーにはコンクリート研ぎ出しの床、小幅板の壁、シルキーオークの特徴的な杢目の棚を採用。既存のコンクリートと調和しながらも、各素材が際立つ空間とした。また、フレキシブルボードの壁面に埋め込んだ姿見が、間口の狭いギャラリーの視認性を高め、通りとの関係性を補完する。簡素なディテールによって素材の個性を活かした空間は、作家のものづくりに通じる合理性を体現している。
2～4階の居住空間には、既存のコンクリートのモジュールや鉄部の原色の塗装色に対して、壁に赤みを帯びた合板を採用。曲線を描く階段の周囲にはアーチの開口を設け、建築がもつ要素と調和を図った。家族が集うスペースは約10畳と限られるため、住まいの中心にキッチンを据えた。既存のレンジフードを活かしつつ、新たに配置したキッチンは、作業面とカウンターとを人工大理石による一体の造形とすることで、コンクリートと対峙する存在とした。
既存建物の素材と形態を受け入れながら新旧の要素の調和を図り、内外が緩やかに繋がる「職住一体」の新たな生活の場を実現した。（古谷野裕一）
An atelier and residence with an external staircase connecting work and residence, inheriting the materials and form of the building
A bag artist based in Hokkaido acquired a 20-year-old, four-story building in Tokyo to establish a new base. The building is located near a small private railway station in a corner of the city with many private stores.
The building, completed by the previous owner together with an architect, has a characteristic configuration. Access to each floor is via an exterior staircase in the center of the site, and natural light from the top light accentuates the texture of the concrete. The client sympathized with the building’s individuality and decided to renovate it to make it a new base of operations.
In this project, we aimed to realize a space in which the old and new elements harmonize while maintaining their independence, based on a dialogue with the components of the existing building.
The first floor was reconfigured into a space for artists’ activities connected to the city. The gallery is on the street side, and the atelier is at the back of the site across the courtyard. Two newly constructed walls flow from the street to the rear of the site. The gallery’s long wall leads the eye to the rear of the site, while the short wall of the atelier catches the flow. These two orthogonal walls unite the spaces across the courtyard into a single space.
The gallery has a polished concrete floor, small baseboard walls, and silky oak shelves with a characteristic wooden grain. While harmonizing with the existing concrete, each material stands out in the space. In addition, the sightlines embedded in the flexible board wall enhance the visibility of the gallery’s narrow frontage and complement its relationship to the street. The space, which uses the materials’ individuality through simple details, embodies the rationality common to the artist’s craftsmanship.
In the living spaces on the second through fourth floors, reddish plywood is used for the walls against the existing concrete modules and the primary paint color of the steel parts. Arched openings were created around the curved staircase to harmonize with the architectural elements. Since the family gathering space is limited to approximately 10 tatami mats, the kitchen was placed at the center of the house. While utilizing the existing range hood, the newly placed kitchen is made to confront the concrete by integrating the work surface and the counter with artificial marble.
While accepting the existing building’s materials and form, we sought to harmonize the old and new elements to create a new place for living that gently connects the inside and outside. (Yuichi Koyano)
