白く厚みのある外観が特徴的な、金沢市郊外の敷地に建つ中庭式住宅である。
建主の希望はミニマルで真っ白な意匠と多数の屋外空間、すなわち屋根付き玄関ポーチ、自家用車2台分の屋根付きガレージ、そして中庭を備えた住宅、というものだった。確かに屋根付きの玄関ポーチやガレージは雪の多い金沢において不可欠なものだが、決められた予算の中でこれらをすべて確保した場合、生活するための内部空間が圧迫されることになりかねない。また、中庭は雪によって容易に埋没してしまうことが予想されており、降雪地帯の生活に適合させるためには何らかの工夫が必要になる。
これらの問題を解決するため、提案されたのが屋外空間同士をクランクさせながら互いに繋いでいくというアイデアである。ひとつひとつの屋外空間の大きさは抑制しつつ、隣接する屋外空間同士を繋ぐことで互いの機能を補完させ、次に繋がる空間からは太陽光が差し込むことで、奥行きの深さが暗示されて各空間が狭苦しく感じられない、そのような構成が模索された。
この方針の下では、ガレージなどの空間を中庭のようなプライバシーが求められる空間と接続する必要があるため、各屋外空間を立体的にクランクさせることで視線を遮断し、外から内部を見通すことが出来ないようにしている。我々はこの一連の屋外空間を「白い洞窟」と名付け、これを取り巻くように居室空間を配置することで、中庭式住宅特有の静謐な空間に生じる光の変化を生活に取り込むことにした。同時に、これら屋外空間の繋がりは中庭やテラスに積もった雪を除去するための搬出経路としての役割ももっており、「白い洞窟」は中庭式住宅を降雪地帯で成立させるための実用的な仕組みともなっている。
こうして生じた一連の屋外空間は、外界から隔絶され研ぎ澄まされた美しさをもっており、これをさらに際立たせるため、中庭の防水層に工夫を加え、浅く水を張って水盤とすることが出来るようにした。陽光が差し込む白い壁と空の景観に水が導入されたことで、光の反射とゆらぎがもたらされ、ミニマルな美意識に囲まれた生活に柔らかな表情の変化が与えられている。（山本卓郎）
A courtyard house with a cranked outdoor space that brings spaciousness feeling
White Cave House is characterized by its thick, white exterior and courtyard built on a site in the suburbs of Kanazawa City.
Our client requested a minimal, pure white design with several outdoor spaces. In other words, their house should have a covered entrance porch, a garage for two cars, and a courtyard. The covered entrance porch and garage are indeed essential in Kanazawa, which receives heavy snowfall and means that the courtyard would easily have been buried in snow. By trying to meet all of the requirements within a set budget, the interior space for living would have had to be sidelined. We needed to adapt the house and its courtyard to a lifestyle in a snowy area.
To solve these problems, the proposal was to connect each of the outdoor spaces by cranking them. We sought a framework for the composition where adjacent outdoor spaces would complement their functions while restraining the size of each space yet retain their connections, and each space would not feel cramped since sunlight from an adjacent space would imply depth.
Under this policy, it was necessary to connect the garage, where privacy is not required, to the courtyard, where privacy is required. Therefore, we blocked the view from the outside by turning each of the outdoor spaces three-dimensionally so that the inside could not be seen from the outside. Naming this series of outdoor spaces “White Cave,” we had our client incorporate the variations in light within the serene space specific to a house with a courtyard into their lives by arranging rooms around the White Cave. Another important feature is that the connection between these outdoor spaces serves as a route to remove and carry away snow from the courtyard and the terrace. The White Cave is also a practical system to maintain the courtyard of a house in a snowy area.
The series of outdoor spaces created under such conditions has a simple beauty isolated from the outside world. To emphasize this even more, we took a different approach for the waterproof layer in the courtyard—it can be used as a shallow water basin. The reflections and flickers of light are generated by incorporating water into the landscape of the white wall with the sunlight and the sky. Thus, a change has been added to the lives surrounded with a simple beauty to achieve a mild expression. (Takuro Yamamoto)
