秋田県北の中核都市・大館市の郊外に建つ、夫婦と子供4人のための平屋の住宅。大館市は日本海側気候の多雪地域（設計上の垂直積雪量は1.5m）である。
配置計画はところどころ北側に凹凸のついた東西に長いボリュームで、冬のか細い太陽光を取り込み、効率的な通風を促すかたちである。設計当初からの要望で大きなポイントに挙げられていたのは、4人の子供たちのための個室の確保と、水回りを含む家事動線の機能的な配置であった。
この住宅では性格の異なる2種類のサンルームを設けている。これまでと同様に掃き出しのガラス建具による露出の度合いの大きいサンルームと、腰まで土で埋め露出の度合いを抑えたサンルーム。露出の大きいサンルームは、寒さの厳しい北国にあっても開放的な空間をつくり出す。冬には低温域となる緩衝空間が、光と風景を（守られた高温域の）生活空間に招き入れる。一方、腰まで土に埋めたサンルームは、そこまで室温が下がらない中温域の空間である。ある時は開け、ある時は閉じ、適度な温度と開放性を備えた空間は動線や物干し場など生活のための場所として積極的に機能する。
寒さを遠ざける緩衝空間にはこれまで「高温と低温」という2つの概念しかなかった。そこに「中温」という概念を追加することで、住まい手はもっと柔軟に空間を駆使して生活することができる。
もとより北国の人は気候や身の回りの環境に対して繊細な感覚を備えている。雪が降るのか、どれくらい降るのか、風はどうか、気温はどうか。そんな環境の微妙な変化に自らの所作を適応させて生きてきた。住まい手の繊細な感覚をそのまま写したような空間。環境を感じ、選び、微調整しながら生活する。その生活のありようこそが北国の住空間における美しさであると考えている。（蟻塚 学）
A one-story house that responds flexibly to living with an intermediate thermal environment provided by a sunroom
This one-story house for a couple and their four children is in the suburbs of Odate City, a core city in northern Akita Prefecture. Odate City is located on the coast of the Sea of Japan and has a heavy snowfall area (the vertical snow accumulation in the design is 1.5m).
The house’s layout is a long east-west volume with some unevenness on the north side, to let in the thin sunlight in winter and promote efficient ventilation. The main requests from the beginning of the design process were to secure private rooms for the four children and a functional arrangement of the housework flow, including the water supply system.
The house has two types of sunrooms with different characteristics. One is a sunroom with a large amount of exposure with sweeping glass fixtures as in the past, and the other is a sunroom filled with soil up to the waist to minimize the degree of exposure. The sunroom, which has a large exposure, creates an open space even in the cold northern climate. The buffer space, which becomes a low-temperature area in winter, invites light and scenery into the (protected, high-temperature) living space. On the other hand, the sunroom, which is buried in the earth up to the waist, is a medium-temperature space where the room temperature does not drop that low. The sunroom is open at times and closed at other times, and with moderate temperature and openness, it actively functions as a place for living, such as a flow line and a place to dry clothes.
Until now, there have been only two concepts for buffer spaces that keep the cold away: high and low temperatures. Adding the concept of “medium temperature” allows residents to make more flexible use of space in their daily lives.
People in northern countries have a delicate sense of climate and the environment around them. Whether it snows, how much snow falls, how the wind blows, or what the temperature is. They have lived their lives by adapting their behavior to such subtle environmental changes. The space captures the delicate senses of the residents as it is. They live their lives by sensing, selecting, and fine-tuning their environment. This way of life is the beauty of northern living spaces. (Manabu Aritsuka)
