敷地は沖縄県の離島、宮古島の市街地から車で約20分の周囲には畑が広がる、古くからの集落の中に位置する。県外から転勤で宮古島に赴任されたご夫婦が、自然豊かな宮古島をこれからの住む場所と決め、土地探しの末、この土地に出会った。その敷地には、樹齢が宮古島の中でもいちばん古いのではないかと思われるほどの大きなソテツやリュウキュウマツ、ガジュマル、センネンボク、サガリバナ、トックリヤシのほか、マンゴーの木など、もともとあったものなのか、先住の方もしくはその前の世代の方が植樹した物なのか、あらゆる植物が雑然と、また鬱蒼と茂る敷地であった。そのような敷地の永い歴史に魅力を感じ、この地の新しい住人となることをご夫婦は希望し、宮古島への移住と住宅の建築を決意された。
設計の相談を受け、敷地を見たときに、私もご夫婦がこの土地に住むと決めたときの想いをすぐに感じ取ることができた。それほどこの敷地にある植物が魅力的で、力強く、永い歴史を感じるとともに、次の世代に継承していかなければならない土地であることを感じた。そこで、設計するにあたり、まず既存の植物の位置を測量にて図面化し、できる限り既存の植物を残せるような配置を提案した。この土地の中心的な存在であるソテツとリュウキュウマツなどがあるスペースをこの土地の核として各室を計画し、それぞれの室の開口の大きさや配置、また建物のボリュームを吟味することにより、その圧倒的な存在感をもつ敷地内の植物と建築が一体となるように考え設計を行なった。
建築的にも植物の緑と、宮古島の青い空の色を邪魔することなく上手く馴染むように、内外ともに彩度を落としたコンクリート打ち放し仕上げとし、床天井なども仕上げ材も極力減らして、時間とともに味わいを増していくような建築とした。現代の建築において、庭は建築物の中から見て、愉しみ、癒される物として計画することが多くなっているように思えるが、この度計画した建物は、外部から植物を介して見える建築がその地の自然と共に成長していき、いずれ永い歴史の中でその土地に馴染み、継承されていく建築になったと考えている。（畠山武史）
A house that harmonizes with plantings reflecting the history of the land through the opening and the building's unique layout
The site is located in an old village with fields spreading out around it, about 20 minutes by car from the city center of Miyakojima, a remote island in Okinawa Prefecture. The couple, transferred to Miyakojima from outside the prefecture, decided that Miyakojima, an island rich in nature, would be their future home. After searching for land, they came across this plot of land. The site is home to a large cycad tree, which is probably the oldest tree in Miyako Island, a Japanese cinnamon tree, a banyan tree, a Japanese ash, a Japanese pagoda tree, and a mango tree, all of which may have been there originally or were planted by the previous residents or the generation before that, The site was cluttered and thickly overgrown with all kinds of plants. The couple was attracted by the site’s long history and wished to become new residents, so they decided to move to Miyakojima and build a house.
When I consulted with them about the design and saw the site, I could immediately sense the thoughts and feelings that the couple had when they decided to live on this land. That is how attractive and powerful the plants on this site are, and I sensed a long history and a land that must be handed down to the next generation. In the design process, we first surveyed and drew the locations of the existing plants, and proposed a layout that would preserve as much of the existing vegetation as possible. We designed each room as the nucleus of the site, with the cycad and the Japanese white pine, which are the central elements of the site, as well as the size and arrangement of the openings in each room and the volume of the building, so that the architecture would be integrated with the overwhelming presence of the plants on the site.
The interior and exterior were finished with a low-saturation fair-faced concrete finish, and floor and ceiling finishes were reduced as much as possible, to blend in well with the green plants and the blue sky of Miyakojima without interfering with the architecture, and to create a building that will develop its flavor over time. In modern architecture, gardens are often planned as something to be seen, enjoyed, and healed from within the building. The building, which can be seen from the outside through the plants, will grow together with the nature of the site. (Takeshi Hatakeyama)
