高い生垣や樹木に囲まれた敷地には、従前の木造2階建ての古い日本家屋がすっぽりと納まっており、また、家屋に面して人の手入れが何年も施されていない200坪ほどの日本庭園を有していた。本プロジェクトは、この日本庭園のある住宅の建て替え計画である。
建物は大きな3枚の切妻屋根で構成されており、背景にある山になじませた形状としている。屋根は本瓦葺き、外壁は漆喰と焼杉板の組み合わせとしているが、どれも風致地区条例で和風表現の担保のために指定されている材料である。
構造は、広いスパン、高い天井高を実現するために鉄骨造とした。150mm角の柱と梁幅をベースにした鉄骨ブレース構造により、柱型や梁型が出ないようにし、床・壁・屋根による明快な構成としている。
大屋根の軒の出は最大で約2.5mあり、大きな面積の軒天が出現する。風致地区での指定がなかった軒天の素材に無方向性ヘアライン仕上げのアルミカットパネルを用いることで、日中は外の緑を薄っすら映し出し、夜には室内の明かりをテラスに注ぐような柔らかな環境をつくり出している。また、目線に近い下屋の軒天はカットTによる現しの垂木とすることで、金属質で現代的な和風表現をしている。
新しい建築は「日本庭園」を再生して活かすため、十分に広い土地ではある中で既存の建物とほぼ同じ位置に配置した。さらに新たな庭として、玄関ホールのアイキャッチとなり広い住宅内に自然採光を促す「松の中庭」、ダイニングテラスと続く屋外利用ができる「芝生の庭」、車でも乗り入れ可能な「前庭」、既存高木帯との間でゆっくりくつろげる「木陰の庭」、サービスヤードのある機能的な「裏庭」を計画し、室内の機能を結び付けるような配置構成としている。
従前に利用されていた、もしくは散在していた手水鉢・蹲・石灯籠・石は、それぞれの庭に再配置することで、古と今を繋ぎとめる役割を担っている。具体的には、「松の中庭」には新規の黒松と既存の石灯籠を組み合わせ、既存の巨大な手水鉢は鎖樋と接続するなどの操作を行うことで、新たな景観と機能を纏っている。
日本の和風住宅を鉄骨造で表現した新しさと古さが入り混じりながら環境に溶け込む住宅となっている。（梅澤豪太郎）
A residence that inherits the essence of traditional Japanese gardens, where five new gardens connect daily life
The site, enclosed by tall hedges and trees, housed an old two-story wooden Japanese house that fit perfectly within its boundaries. It also featured a Japanese garden of about 200 tsubo (approximately 660 square meters) facing the house, which had not been maintained for many years. This project involves rebuilding the residence with its Japanese garden.
The building features three large gabled roofs, designed to blend with the mountains in the background. The roof is covered with traditional Japanese tiles. At the same time, the exterior walls combine plaster and charred cedar boards—materials all specified by the scenic district ordinance to ensure a Japanese aesthetic expression.
The structure utilizes steel framing to achieve wide spans and high ceilings. A steel bracing system based on 150mm square columns and beams eliminates visible column and beam profiles, creating a precise composition defined by floors, walls, and roof.
The eaves overhang of the main roof extends up to approximately 2.5 meters, creating a large area of exposed soffit. By using anodized aluminum cut panels with a non-directional hairline finish for the soffit material—unrestricted by scenic district regulations—the design creates a soft environment. During the day, it subtly reflects the surrounding greenery, while at night, it gently diffuses indoor light onto the terrace. Furthermore, the soffit of the lower roof, positioned near eye level, features exposed rafters using cut T-shaped sections, achieving a metallic, modern Japanese aesthetic.
To regenerate and utilize the “Japanese garden,” the new building was positioned nearly identical to the existing structure within the ample land available. Furthermore, as new gardens, the following were planned to connect the functions of the interior spaces: the “Pine Courtyard,” serving as an eye-catching feature in the entrance hall and promoting natural light throughout the spacious residence; the “Lawn Garden,” usable outdoors and connecting to the dining terrace; the “Front Garden,” accessible by car; the “Shaded Garden,” offering a relaxing space between the existing tall trees; and the functional “Backyard” with a service yard.
Previously used or scattered elements like the water basin, tsukubai, stone lanterns, and stones were relocated to their respective gardens, serving to connect the past and present. Specifically, the “Pine Courtyard” combines a new black pine with an existing stone lantern. In contrast, the massive existing water basin was connected to a chain gutter, creating a new landscape and function.
This residence, expressing Japanese-style housing through steel-frame construction, blends new and old elements while seamlessly integrating into its surroundings. (Gotaro Umezawa)
