敷地は雑木林や畑が広がる中に住宅が点在する、のどかな農村地域に位置する。西側には湧水によって侵食された谷津が広がり、起伏に富んだ地形による里山景観が残されており、隣地の傾斜林を下った先には、両親が暮らす実家がある。この敷地からは古墳時代の竪穴式住居が発掘されており、水環境に恵まれた自然豊かな高台は、古代から人が住むのに適していたことがうかがえる。こうした場所には、環境に素直に呼応する建ち方がふさわしいのではないかと感じた。
そこで、細長い平屋のヴォリュームに切妻屋根を架け、敷地に対し南西方向にわずかに振って配置することで、四方向へ開放的な関係を築けるのではないかと考えた。建物の周囲は、眺望の広がる西側の庭、家庭菜園を楽しむ南側の畑など性格の異なる外部空間が緩やかに分節され、それぞれと繋がる住環境を目指した。
架構は、建物間口の半分にあたる1間半モジュールを基本とし、奥行きを調整しながら連続する単純な構成とした。その半分は、縁側を拡張したようなひと繋がりの空間とし、長手には東西で対をなす外壁と開口の反復が短辺方向にも抜けをつくり、風景が見え隠れしながら多方向に展開することで、空間を超えた広がりを感じさせる。また、屋根架構が連続する半屋外空間である外土間やサンルームは、暮らしが外へと広がるきっかけの場となる。大地に寄り添うように軒先を低く抑えたこの住宅は、道路側から見ると周辺に点在するビニールハウスのような佇まいで、風景にそっと馴染んでいる。
環境、敷地、建築の関係性に向き合いながら、性能や数値を追求するだけでは捉えきれない縁側や軒下、土間、サンルームといった半屋外的な要素に快適さを見出し、この場所ならではの風景を感じられる住宅のあり方が、日々の暮らしの豊かさへと繋がるのではないかと考えた。

The site is located in a peaceful rural area where houses are scattered among mixed woodlands and farm fields. To the west lies a valley eroded by spring water, preserving a satoyama landscape characterized by undulating terrain; at the foot of the sloping forest on the adjacent property stands the family home where the client’s parents live. A pit dwelling from the Kofun period has been excavated on this site, suggesting that this natural, elevated hill—blessed with a rich aquatic environment—has been suitable for human habitation since ancient times. A building design that responds naturally to its surroundings is most appropriate for such a location.
Therefore, I envisioned placing a gabled roof over a long, narrow, single-story volume and positioning it slightly offset to the southwest relative to the site, believing this would create an open relationship with the surroundings in all four directions. The area surrounding the building is gently divided into external spaces with distinct characters—such as the west-facing garden with expansive views and the south-facing plot for a home vegetable garden—and I aimed to create a living environment connected to each of these spaces.
The structural framework is based on a 1.5-ken module—equal to half the building’s frontage—forming a simple, continuous composition with adjusted depths. Half of this space is designed as a single, uninterrupted area, akin to an extended engawa (veranda). Along the long axis, the repetition of exterior walls and openings—which form a pair running east to west—creates openings on the short sides as well. As the landscape unfolds in multiple directions, appearing and disappearing, this design evokes a sense of expansiveness that transcends the physical space. Furthermore, the semi-outdoor spaces—such as the outdoor earthen floor and sunroom, which are defined by the continuous roof structure—serve as catalysts for extending daily life outward. With its eaves kept low as if hugging the earth, this residence, when viewed from the street, resembles the plastic greenhouses scattered throughout the neighborhood, blending gently into the landscape.
By engaging with the relationship between the environment, the site, and the architecture, we sought comfort in semi-outdoor elements—such as the engawa (veranda), eaves, earthen floor, and sunroom—that cannot be fully captured by pursuing performance metrics alone. We believed that a home designed to allow residents to experience the unique scenery of this location would lead to a richer daily life.
