This is the new headquarters for the railway company’s Digital Solutions Division.
The site is located within a station building adjacent to JR Osaka Station. It features a narrow, elongated floor plan of approximately 100 meters, in which the east-west axis serves as the very framework of the space. Facing the building stands Hiroshi Hara’s design, Umeda Sky Building, while below lies the redevelopment area, known collectively as “Umekita,” and Grand Green. This view, where past and present overlap, stands as an unshakably complete composition, and the given premise itself forms the strong framework of the space.
Within this long, large, and open space, two gradients are superimposed, extending continuously from east to west and from the interior to the exterior. The entrance hall, which is the most public space, is located at the eastern end; as one proceeds westward from there, the character of the space gradually shifts from public to private and from open to closed. At the same time, the layout incorporates the site’s unique orientation—which opens widely toward Grand Green and the Umeda Sky Building—and its sense of physical openness.
Modules of 400/600/1200 mm are layered to define space and dimensions. This rhythm is repeated as a fundamental unit—from architectural scales such as the layout of system ceilings and curtain walls to custom-built furniture based on the 400-mm module, which is closest to the human body. The visual grid, segmented by the repetition of these standard units over a distance of 100 meters, uses a subdued color palette—ranging from light gray to gray to blue-gray—to complement the differences in function and area, as well as the spatial hierarchy.
We envisioned these replicated, repeated units as guidelines that connect people to the space itself in this environment where creative talent gathers to generate new ideas, helping them discover their own place and orient themselves within it.
