Located in the Kohoku region of Shiga Prefecture, Makino Town in Takashima City is a rich area where abundant water from Mount Hiei, diverse vegetation, and ecosystems coexist, preserving the natural landscape of a traditional satoyama. Stone walls dating back to the Edo period line the lakeshore, and in the Harie district of Takashima City, the tradition of using spring water for drinking and cooking (known as “kabata”) persists today. In Makino Town, metasequoia trees were planted as windbreaks and have become a tourist attraction as a row of trees characteristic of the highlands. At the same time, the area has a history of coexisting with a harsh natural environment marked by heavy snowfall and mountain winds, and the starting point of this project is to inherit that wisdom and way of life. Although the site is a small area located east of the metasequoia grove, rather than treating it as an isolated entity, the plan was designed to integrate horse-drawn carriage operations and landscape design with the surrounding satoyama, vast farmland, and mountainous terrain. The goal was to create architecture that harmonizes with the area’s profound landscape and allows the activities of horses and people to take root in the land.

This project embodies TCC Japan’s philosophy of supporting retired horses in their second careers. To create a place where retired horses can live comfortably and remain active, the landscape design includes areas for grazing and designated departure and arrival points for horse-drawn carriages and led horses. The architectural design features a café where visitors can relax, as well as a waiting area for horse-drawn carriages and led horses. By designing an appropriate distance that allows horses and people to interact without stress, and by integrating the landscape—including the surrounding topography—with the architecture, we have created a new landscape of coexistence where both horses and people can spend time comfortably together.

The site is located near a row of metasequoia trees, and the design required establishing a relationship with the metasequoia grove extending to the northwest and the majestic Hira Mountain Range. By interpreting the flow of water from the Hira Mountain Range to Lake Biwa through the topography, we planned the site development so that the architecture would integrate with the surrounding landscape.
In the center of the site, we created an interaction plaza for horses and people, surrounded by the building and paved paths. We planted a total of 19 metasequoia trees—including golden metasequoias that serve as symbolic trees—within the plaza and around the building, forming a metasequoia forest that has become a new symbol of the region.

The building materials are primarily natural resources sourced from the Kinki region and its surrounding areas. The large, smooth, curved wooden roof features a structure resembling interwoven thin planks, supported by sturdy logs. Rammed-earth walls, both indoors and outdoors, connect the columns, creating a flexible structure capable of withstanding snow loads up to 2 meters. The roof has been landscaped with greenery, and by mounding soil to match the roof’s slope, the building harmonizes with the surrounding mountain scenery.
From inside the café and open area on the south side, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the Hira Mountain Range to the north. The walls of the waiting building on the north side are earthen with a straw-bale substrate, providing thermal storage during winter and creating a comfortable space where the natural environment and architecture are in harmony.
