南斜面地に昭和40年代に建てられた個人別荘を、1棟貸しの簡易宿所にコンバージョンするプロジェクト。元の別荘が150m²あり、ぐるっとベランダも回っている状態。泊まる場所としては大きすぎて、管理費ばかりがかさんでしまう。しかも敷地南西側には建物が立っていない状態だったので、とにかく周囲の赤松林と前面の大きな桜の木とを相手に、友好的に面積を減らしていくことを考えた。
玄関位置はそのままに広い土間とキッチンをつくり、その先の部屋をバーベキューなどができる半外部テラスへと減築した。こうすることで外から靴を脱がずに入って調理ができ、森の一部のような場所にサーブして食事ができる。
2階も南東の寝室はまるまる削って吹き抜けとし、東側は隣家が近いため必要な1階のカーテンを閉めても、朝にはリビングが木漏れ日で室内が満たされるようにした。ぐるっと回っていた通路のようなベランダはほぼ全部取り外し、もっとも眺望のいい2階南西を外部化して浴室兼テラスとした。ヒノキの無垢材で床壁をつくり、ヒノキの香りで満たされ、風呂に入らずともボーっと森を眺められる空間となった。

This project involved converting a private vacation home built in the Showa 40s on a south-facing slope into a simple guesthouse available for whole-house rental. The original vacation home measured 150 m² and had a veranda. It was too large to serve as a guesthouse, and maintenance costs were mounting. Furthermore, since there were no buildings on the southwest side of the lot, we decided to reduce the building’s footprint to harmonize with the surrounding red pine forest and the large cherry tree in front.
While keeping the entrance in its original location, we created a spacious earthen-floored area and a kitchen. We reduced the size of the room beyond it to create a semi-outdoor terrace suitable for barbecues and other activities. This allows guests to enter without removing their shoes and cook right away, then serve and enjoy meals in a space that feels like an extension of the forest.
On the second floor, we completely removed the southeast bedroom to create an open-air atrium. Since the neighboring house is close on the east side, we ensured that even with the first-floor curtains closed—which are necessary—the living room would be filled with dappled sunlight in the morning. We removed almost the entire balcony, which had previously served as a walkway circling the house. We converted the southwest corner of the second floor, which offers the best view, into an open-air space serving as both a bathroom and a terrace. We constructed the floors and walls from solid hinoki wood, creating a space filled with hinoki scent where one can gaze out at the forest, even without taking a bath.
