京都発のコーヒーショップブランド・％ ARABICAのロースタリーが、エジプト・カイロの衛星都市であるニューカイロ中心部に位置する複合施設「U-Venues」へ初出店した。「SEE THE WORLD THROUGH COFFEE」というフィロソフィを掲げ、素材・環境・慣習など、地域の特性を考慮したブレンドデザインにより、店舗ごとに独自のコンセプトを打ち出している。
カイロは広大な砂漠地帯に古代遺跡が点在し、歴史や文化が色濃く残る一方で、現代的な都市開発も進んでおり、その立地性と、エジプトのシンボルでもある石切場からインスピレーションを得て「積み上げる」という要素で空間をデザインした。
石切場の不規則な場景を空間全体に渡って表現するため、800mm角にモジュール化した石灰岩を階段状に積み上げ、ランダムな動線と高低差を作り出すことで適度に視線が抜ける居心地のよい空間を生み出している。
バリスタのパフォーマンス、焙煎器や豆袋を全面光膜で象徴的に演出する一方で、シーティングエリアではゲストが滞在するベンチのみに限定した面発光により光のコントラストを生み出し、またフロアやウォールに古代エジプトの象形文字を模した％ ARABICAのオリジナルヒエログリフをインテリアエレメントとして取り入れることで、伝統的な要素と現代的な表現が相まった空間となっている。

The roastery of % ARABICA, a Kyoto-based coffee shop brand, has opened its first location at “U-Venues,” a mixed-use complex located in the heart of New Cairo, a satellite city of Cairo, Egypt. Guided by the philosophy “SEE THE WORLD THROUGH COFFEE,” the brand creates unique concepts for each store through blend designs that take into account regional characteristics such as ingredients, the environment, and local customs.
Cairo is a city where ancient ruins are scattered across vast desert landscapes, preserving a rich history and culture while also undergoing rapid modern urban development. Drawing inspiration from the location and the quarries—also a symbol of Egypt—the space was designed around the theme of “stacking.”
To express the irregular scenery of a quarry throughout the entire space, 800mm square modular limestone blocks were stacked in a stair-step pattern, creating random pathways and variations in elevation to produce a comfortable space with just the right amount of visual openness.
While the baristas’ performances, roasters, and bean bags are symbolically highlighted with full-surface lighting, the seating area features surface lighting limited solely to the benches where guests sit, creating a contrast in lighting. Furthermore, by incorporating % ARABICA’s original hieroglyphs—modeled after ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs—into the floor and walls as interior elements, the space achieves a harmonious blend of traditional elements and contemporary expression.
