福岡市中央区で築40年近くのマンションを改修した。
隣地には林、200m先には都市的な街並みが望める。北／東／南の3面から採光可能な区画となっており、外周部だけで9面の開口部（孔）が用意されていた。また、既存躯体は壁式構造で3LDKの間取りを固定するような位置に構造壁があり、住人がその間取りに合わせて生活することはあまりに窮屈な形式だった。そこで3LDKの間取りから壁に孔をあけたり、壁を追加したりと、「8R」に細分化することとした。
新たにつくった壁と既存内部壁の孔を合わせると内部には9つの孔ができた。内外合計で18の孔によって人間の動きによって生じる、「見え隠れする連続風景体」をつくり出した。移動による内外の風景が移り変わり、孔の先の風景は部分でありながら全体であるような多孔質な空間となっている。
8Rの現時点での使い方は、玄関・洗面トイレ・キッチン・ダイニング・居間・寝室・リビングダイニング・浴室となっている。そうすることで家族の変化によって寝室が増加したり、リビングとダイニングを交換したりとフレキシブルなプランを想定している。
この住処で最初に決定したものは風呂の位置である。南東の2面窓を確保した部屋を浴室とした。その部屋の窓からは隣地の山と遠くの都市の風景が見え、気持ちの良い半露天風呂となっている。
本プロジェクトでは、既存壁に取りつく下地は残して利用し、躯体開口から70mmの縁を切り取り、既存下地の上から障子紙を張っている。そのほかの新規壁は既存下地と同じ約70mmの厚みで壁をつくり、塗装を施した。廃棄量を最小限に抑えつつ、次の入居者が行うかもしれないリノベーションに対して、障子紙の張替えか、既存下地までの撤去とすることができ、そこでの解体量も抑えることを目的としている。

We renovated a nearly 40-year-old apartment building in Chuo Ward, Fukuoka City.
A wooded area lies next door, and an urban skyline can be seen 200 meters away. The unit is designed to receive natural light from three sides—north, east, and south—with nine openings provided along the perimeter alone. Furthermore, the existing structure was a wall-bearing system, with structural walls positioned in a way that rigidly defined the 3LDK floor plan, making it far too restrictive for residents to live comfortably within that layout. Therefore, we decided to subdivide the 3LDK layout into an “8R” configuration by cutting openings in the walls and adding new walls.
Combining the openings in the newly constructed walls with those in the existing interior walls created nine openings inside the space. The total of 18 openings—both interior and exterior—generate a “continuous, ever-changing landscape” that appears and disappears as people move through the space. As one moves, the views of the interior and exterior shift, creating a porous space where the view through each opening is both a part and a whole.
The current configuration of the “8R” layout consists of an entrance, a washroom with toilet, a kitchen, a dining area, a sitting room, a bedroom, a living-dining area, and a bathroom. This design allows for flexibility—such as adding bedrooms as the family grows or swapping the living and dining areas—to adapt to changing family needs.
The first decision made for this residence was the location of the bath. A room with two south-east-facing windows was designated as the bathroom. The windows in this room offer views of the mountain on the neighboring property and the distant cityscape, creating a pleasant semi-open-air bath.
In this project, we retained and used the existing wall studs; we cut a 70mm border from the structural opening and applied shoji paper over the existing studs. For the other new walls, we constructed them to the same thickness as the existing studs—approximately 70 mm—and applied a coat of paint. The goal was to minimize waste while also ensuring that, should the next occupant undertake renovations, they could either simply replace the shoji paper or remove the structure down to the existing studs, thereby reducing the amount of demolition required.
