We designed a home for a young couple in an area of Tokyo where small houses cluster near a shopping district.
Although it is a small house located just outside the city center, we sought to create spaces that were as tall, spacious, and large as possible.
Although it was technically possible to build a three-story structure within the height restrictions, we were concerned this would limit the floor-to-ceiling height and force a cramped lifestyle. Therefore, we reduced the number of stories to two and maximized volume rather than floor area, proposing a space with a sense of scale unusual for a narrow-lot home. By keeping the ceiling height on the first floor—which houses the bathrooms and bedrooms—to a minimum, we achieved a ceiling height exceeding 4 meters on the second floor, where the living-dining-kitchen (LDK) is located.
To preserve the expansive spatial quality of the second floor, the space was designed to be column-free, with a truss supporting the 4.55 m × 7.28 m roof positioned centrally. An arc-shaped steel frame supports the vaulted roof, using a structural system that eliminates the need for bent members in the wooden framework. Because only φ9 round steel bars are visible on the surface, the result is an exceptionally light and airy curved roof that appears to peel back and float.
The northern half of the gable roof forms a vaulted curve; inside, this curve captures the light streaming in from the high-side windows and skylights, diffusing it throughout the entire space. Light from the second floor extends down to the first floor via the staircase and a glass bench, conveying a sense of scale throughout the building.
A glass bench is installed in the atrium connecting the first and second floors. By creating an experience of “throwing oneself” into the atrium, the design introduces human-scale behavior into the building’s grand sense of scale, creating a unique landscape where these scales intersect.
This approach could offer one solution to the ongoing search for urban housing that allows for comfortable living even in confined spaces. We believe that the “unexpected sense of scale” that emerges each time one opens the front door and ascends the stairs contributes to a more direct connection between the residents’ daily lives and their physical sensations.
