敷地は沖縄本島南部にある南城市。海にも程近く自然の森に囲まれた場所である。巨大な琉球石灰岩やこの場所特有な植物が群生し、古い石積みなども残っている。
決められた場所で決められた時間に決められた席が用意されているような既存の学校教育の硬直した枠組みから外れ、 柔軟に自由に学び過ごすことができるような「第3の居場所」 が求められた。
打ち合わせを重ねる中で、クライアントの口から出た「用途は決めたくないんです」と言う言葉がずっと僕たちの頭の中に残っていた。本来であれば必要な機能をまとめ、どのような用途で使われるかを想定してプログラムや形態が決まっていく。
「形態は機能に従う」そんな言葉とは全く逆のアプローチで子供たちの自由な成長と学びの場になるような「第3の居場所」を目指した。
本計画地は2つの大きな琉球石灰岩を抜けた先にある傾斜地になっており、琉球王朝時代よりも古い石積みの段々畑や少しの平地が残っていた。なるべくもとの状態を崩さず、森の木は伐採せず建物の配置を決め、構造的にも土地の状態をなるべく崩さないよう敷地の傾斜なりにマッドスラブのベタ基礎を打ち、紙管型枠のRC丸柱の高さで水平を取り2階建木造を乗せた。
湿度の高い沖縄のこの場所において、高床形式にすることで雨や土砂を流し建物自体が流されないようにもしている。
この土地の力を借りて、寛容でおおらかな沖縄らしい居場所が生まれたのではないか。（岡山泰士、森田修平、仲本兼一郎）
A learning space that builds a sense of belonging not from function, but from connection to the environment and community
The site is located in Nanjo City, in the southern part of Okinawa Island. It is a place surrounded by natural forests, close to the sea. Giant Ryukyu limestone formations and unique local plants grow in clusters, and old stone walls remain.
The project aimed to create a “third place” – a flexible, free learning environment – by breaking away from the rigid framework of conventional schooling, where specific seats are assigned at particular times in specific locations.
Throughout our discussions, the client’s words, “We don’t want to decide the purpose,” lingered in our minds. Typically, necessary functions are compiled, and the program and form are determined by envisioning how it will be used.
We aimed for a “third place” that would become a space for children’s free growth and learning, taking an approach opposite to the phrase “form follows function.”
The site is a sloping terrain beyond two large Ryukyu limestone outcrops, where terraced fields built with stone masonry dating back to before the Ryukyu Kingdom era and a small amount of flat land remained. The building layout was determined without cutting down the forest trees, preserving the original state as much as possible. Structurally, to minimize disturbance to the land, a monolithic slab foundation was poured following the site’s slope. Using paper tube formwork, the height of the reinforced concrete round columns was leveled, and a two-story wooden structure was placed atop them.
In this humid Okinawan location, the elevated platform design also prevents the building itself from being washed away by rain and sediment.
By harnessing the land’s inherent qualities, we believe we’ve created a place that embodies Okinawa’s characteristic tolerance and expansiveness. (Hiroshi Okayama, Shuhei Morita, Kenichiro Nakamoto)
