敷地周辺は昭和初期頃まで花町として賑わった場所であり、現在は古い下町の面影を残している。計画敷地はその昔町屋が建ち並んでいたこともあり、間口が狭く奥行きの長い、いわゆる「うなぎの寝床」の形をしている。課題は、周辺を民家に囲まれた間口7.8m・奥行31mの敷地をいかに有効に使うかであった。
夫婦2人の住まいであり広さは必要なかったため、延床は28坪に抑え、それ以外の空地に「前庭」「中庭」「後庭」の3つの庭を設けた。結果としてF字型の平面形状となり、奥行きの長さが野球のベース間と同じことから「塁間の家」と名付けた。
玄関からLDKまでの床はコンクリート素地仕上げとし、植物を置く温室空間となる。中庭の植栽と一体となり、緑に囲まれた空間が奥のLDKへと誘なう。LDKの床は斜め張りとし、「後庭」への視線を誘導している。「中庭」「後庭」を介して家の中を風が通り抜け、窓からは日の光が射し込む。季節の移ろい、日の出から日没までの1日の移ろいを感じる空間となった。
外装材、内装材には、私たちの理念である「地材地建」の考えのもと、地元の材である魚沼杉を使用している。月日と共に色が変わり、味わいが深くなっていく。「経年変化」ではなく、「経年優化」。新潟の下町という場所に馴染みながら、素敵に変化して行くことを願う。（西巻潤一郎）
An unpartitioned one-story building that takes advantage of the depth
The area surrounding the site was a bustling Hanamachi (red-light district) until the early Showa period, and now retains the appearance of an old downtown area. The site has a narrow frontage and a long depth, a so-called “eel bed” shape, because of the rows of townhouses that once stood there. The challenge was making the most effective use of the site with a frontage of 7.8m and a depth of 31m, surrounded by private houses.
Since the house is for a couple and does not require a large space, the total floor space was kept at 28 tsubos (about 860 square meters), and three gardens, a front garden, a courtyard, and a rear garden, were created on another vacant land. As a result, the house has an F-shaped floor plan and was named “Basement House” because the length of its depth is the same as that between baseball bases.
The floor from the entrance to the LDK is finished with bare concrete and serves as a plant greenhouse space. The floor of the LDK is slanted to guide the eye to the “rear garden. The wind passes through the courtyard and back garden, and sunlight shines through the windows. This space allows visitors to experience the changing of the seasons and the changing day from sunrise to sunset.
For the exterior and interior materials, we used Uonuma cedar, a local material, following our philosophy of “Chi-zai chi-ken” (“build with local materials, build with local construction”). The color changes with time, deepening its taste. We hope it will continue to change beautifully as it blends in with its location in downtown Niigata. (Junichiro Nishimaki)
