敷地は、一帯を区画整理がなされて、住宅と田んぼがパッチワークのようになった地方の住宅街の一角にある。施主は植物や庭いじりが好きで、気に入った植物を植えて楽しみたいこと、また建築は落ち着いた雰囲気にしてほしいという要望があった。
敷地の特性上、建築は周辺の全方位から視認できるため、ボイラー、室外機などの設備機器や雨樋は、メンテナンスを考慮しつつも可能な限り目につきにくい設えにしたいと考えた。また、要求されたボリュームに対して敷地面積が十分にあったので、建築と庭が一対の関係である、いわゆる「庭付きの住宅」とは違い、敷地内での建築と余白の関係、ひいては周辺の空地との関係が豊かになる建築にしようと考えた。
建築は施主の要望からシンプルな箱型とし、スタックとシフトの繰り返しで構成し、それと同時に外構の塀も同じようにシフトをしながら配置した。スタディの過程において創出された、大きな円弧を描くアプローチのある庭、和室のための北向きの庭、寝室からお気に入りの木を愛でる庭など、各所につくられた庭と建築とが絡み合うことで、お互いをより豊かなものにしたいと考えた。また、アプローチや和室前に張り出すキャンチレバーのボリュームは、建築をアイコニックで個性的なものへと昇華させた。
竣工から数年が経ち、木々が成長しハードだった印象が少しずつ柔らかくなって、街に対して優しく落ち着いた表情を漂わせ始めている。

A house where boxes shift and overlap, weaving the margins
The site is located in a corner of a local residential neighborhood where land readjustment has created a patchwork of houses and rice fields. The client enjoys plants and gardening, expressing a desire to plant and care for favorite plants, while also requesting a calm atmosphere in the architecture.
Given the site’s characteristics, the building is visible from all surrounding directions. Therefore, we aimed to conceal equipment like boilers, outdoor units, and rain gutters as much as possible while still allowing for maintenance. Furthermore, the site area was ample for the required volume. Unlike a typical “house with a garden,” where the building and garden form a paired relationship, we sought to create architecture that enriches the relationship between the building and the open spaces on the site, and, by extension, its ties to the surrounding vacant lots.
The building was designed as a simple box shape per the client’s request, composed of repeated stacks and shifts. Simultaneously, the exterior walls were arranged with similar shifts. The unique gardens created during the design process—such as the garden with a large curved approach, the north garden for the Japanese-style room, and the garden where one can admire a favorite tree from the bedroom—along with the floor plan that intertwines with them, enrich the relationship between garden and architecture. The cantilevered volumes projecting over the approach and the Japanese-style room garden elevate the architecture into something iconic and distinctive.
Several years after completion, the trees have grown, gradually softening the building’s initially rigid impression. It now presents a gentle, settled expression to the neighborhood.
