〈西参道テラス〉の外壁の杉格子パネルは、材の歩留まりといった経済的合理性だけではなく、その割付はさることながら、プロポーションや階高、内外の見えがかりのほか、板金や手摺壁といった接する部分との納まり、消防の進入口としての開閉、躯体への日射の低減、そして搬入や施工性、メンテナンス性の観点と多岐にわたる理由から、最終的に3×8版サイズ程度の横格子パネルを製作して現場で取り付けることとなった。横格子パネルに加えて内外の羽目板や外部建具に至るまで丸太から製材し製作しているが、早い段階から検討を進め、丸太を準備することでコストを最小限に抑えている。
必然の細部の集積により専有の中庭部は、プライバシー性の高いきわめてプライベートな落ち着きのある場となり、共有アプローチ部は喧騒から切り離された静寂が広がる。もとからそうであったかのような、違和感やこれ見よがしの部分のない上質な品位が生み出された。(石川素樹、著書『ELEMENTS 5つの建築 5つの断章』より)
Quadruplex and rowhouse-style housing complex in the heart of the city
The decision to use cedar lattice panels for the exterior walls of Nishisando Terrace was based not only on economic rationality, such as the yield of lumber, but also on the allocation of the panels, their proportions, the height of the floor, and how they would look inside and outside. In addition, we decided to make 3×8 horizontal lattice panels and install them at the site for a variety of reasons, such as the fit with the sheet metal and handrail walls, the opening and closing for firefighters to enter the building, the reduction of solar radiation to the building frame, and the ease of installation and maintenance. In addition to the horizontal lattice panels, the interior and exterior paneling and external fittings are made from lumber sawn from logs. Still, the cost has been minimized by early consideration and preparation of the logs.
Through the inevitable accumulation of details, the private courtyard becomes a serene place with a high degree of privacy. At the same time, the shared approach area is a place of silence separated from the hustle and bustle. A high-quality dignity is created without any sense of incongruity or pretentiousness as if it had always been so. (Motoki Ishikawa)
