豊かさを感じる言語でまとめた狭小住居のリノベーション

敷地は上海浦東、ショッピングセンターと地下鉄駅まで徒歩3分という立地であり、施主は上海人、夫婦と子供という家族構成である。
とてもコンパクトなスケルトンのマンションを上海に購入し、新しい生活空間の可能性を求めて設計の依頼をされた。
以前は300m²の賃貸マンションに住んでいたが、子供も大きくなりそろそろ家を出るのでコンパクトな生活にシフトしたいとのことであった。

住宅における豊かさとは何か。それは、何に価値を置くかで感じ方は変化するもの、と捉えている。「豊かさ」とは普遍的なものではなく、当事者が感じられればそれが豊かなのではないか。
お金を出せばあらゆるものが手に入る上海では、価値観の創造が一番難しい。
部屋の広さ、豪華さ、ブランド品も豊かさのエレメントとしては決して否定はできない。しかし、今回の計画においては限度がある。
施主はこの狭小空間の中に、豊かさと新しい高級感を感じられることを要望された。
狭くとも、彼らの基準の快適性と最小限の好きなものに囲まれて生活すること。これを実現するためにスタディを繰り返した。

「狭くとも工夫して生活すればよい」「家具はイケアや無印で十分」といった価値観ではなく、内装も家具もこだわった自分だけの特別なものを欲する人たちは確実に存在する。
決して華美なものだけを求めているわけではなく、本質的なアーキテクチャを求める。施主はそういうタイプであった。
長渕剛の名曲『I love you』のように、ストレートな本音と建前をどのようにデザインに消化すれば良いか試行錯誤した。
そして、それが新しい高級感につながるのではないかと考えた。

そこで、デザイン言語の手数を増やすこととし、余白をあまりつくらないことをコンセプトとした。
「新しい空間配置によりいろいろな住み方が誘発される」といったものではなく、きちんと好きなものをデザインして積み重ねる、個から全体を構築する手法である。
1つひとつの施主の要望にデザインを与えていく作業であり、狭小住宅にありがちな収納不足など基本的な課題はすべて解決している。

椅子下の収納や、壁から机が出てくる、といった工夫を随所に凝らし、大きな窓や無垢のテーブル、ルーバーの引き戸といった「豊かさを感じる言語」の手数を増やし設計した。
「狭くとも欲しいものは欲しい」という、良い意味で諦めないデザインを構想した。
それらの手数を1つの世界観にまとめることで、狭小空間の中に愛着と豊かさを感じることができるのではないかと考えた。
例えば、子供が学校で友達に「うちの家は狭いけどテレビは壁とツライチだし、階段は手すりが光るしミニバーもある、集中できる勉強机だってある、大型ロールスクリーンは電動でホテルみたい」と言ってくれたら、こちらの思惑通りである。

1つの世界観にまとめるうえで、調色し炭化させた7mmの縦積層の竹集成材を、キーマテリアルとすることとした。これにより、素朴な中に高級感がある、独特のテクスチャを獲得した。
一部家具部分と床材を除き、竹集成材を内装材として使用している。私が継続して研究、使用してきた、素朴ながらも新しい高級感を感じるマテリアルである。
フローリングと躯体側の壁面材にはあえて白基調のオークを張ることで、竹集成材とのコントラストを強調しつつ、空間的な広がりを与えている。

プランとしては、1階は水回りとリビングダイニングとした。
造り付けのソファの横にミニバーとワインセラー、既存の開口サッシの手前には断熱、遮音効果も高まる木製フレームの窓がインテリアの調和を取っている。
夜景を見ながら『アート・ブレイキー』の音楽をかければ、そこは極上のラウンジバーとなり、友人を呼んでのパーティーも行える。

5mmのフラットバーと竹のルーバーにより構成した引き戸により、キッチンエリアとリビングエリアは分節可能で、狭い空間の中にも連続性を感じる空間構成とした。
基本的に収納は壁面と一体になるといった処理を施すことで、収納という言語が目立たないよう注意し設計した。キッチンの後ろ側も収納でゴミ箱も含め機能をビルトインしている。

2階はベッドルームと畳の子供部屋のあるプライベート空間である。
細長い階段スペースは、鏡の反射を活かし、実際の広さ以上の広さを感じられ、全身鏡にもなっている。
2階は1階とは異なり天井高が低いため、天井は躯体の直塗装とし、床は幅50mmの細いフローリングのヘリンボーン張りとすることで、床に質感を持たせた。
畳の子供寝室には、壁面収納とともに勉強スペースが計画されている。また、採光を確保するため、障子での間仕切りとしている。

最小空間に最大の収納量と複数のデザイン言語を投入した47m²のこの住宅は、さまざまな要素の集積により成り立っている。
47m²という小さな住宅の中に幸せを感じてもらえたら、たまらなく嬉しいことである。（庄司光宏）

Renovation of a small house in a language that feels rich

The project is located in Pudong, Shanghai, just a 3-minute walk from a shopping center and a subway station, and the client is a Shanghainese family consisting of a couple and their children.
The client is a Shanghainese family consisting of a couple and their children. They purchased a very compact skeleton apartment in Shanghai and asked us to design a new living space for them.
They used to live in a rental apartment of 300 square meters, but now that their children are grown and leaving home, they want to shift to a more compact lifestyle.

What is the meaning of affluence in housing? I think it depends on the value you place on it. “Richness is not something universal, but if people can feel it, then it is rich.
In Shanghai, where everything is available if you pay for it, the most difficult thing is to create a sense of value.
The size of the room, the luxury of the room, and brand-name goods can never be denied as elements of affluence. However, in this project, there is a limit.
The client wanted to create a sense of richness and new luxury in this small space.
Even though the space is small, they want to live with their standard of comfort and be surrounded by a minimum of their favorite things. To achieve this, we repeated the study.

Some people do not have a value system that says, “Even if it’s small, you can live in it with ingenuity,” or “IKEA or MUJI is sufficient for furniture,” but rather want something special for themselves with a particular style of interior and furniture.
They are not only looking for something flashy but also for essential architecture. The client was that type of person.
Just like the famous song “I love you” by Tsuyoshi Nagabuchi, we went through a trial and error process to find a way to digest the straightforward true feelings and pretense into the design.
I thought that this would lead to a new sense of luxury.

We decided to increase the number of hands in the design language, and the concept was to leave less blank space.
The concept was not to “induce various ways of living through a new spatial arrangement,” but to design and accumulate the things we like and construct the whole from the individual.
It is a process of giving design to each client’s request, and all the fundamental issues such as the lack of storage often found in tiny houses have been solved.

In addition to the storage space under the chair and the desk coming out of the wall, the design includes large windows, a solid table, and louvered sliding doors to increase the number of hands in the “language of richness.
“In a good sense, I envisioned a design that does not give up, that says, “I want what I want even if it is small.
Combining all of these elements into one worldview could create a sense of attachment and richness within a small space.
For example, if a child says to their friends at school, “My house is small, but the TV is flush with the wall, the stairs have a shiny railing and a mini-bar, there is even a study desk where I can concentrate, and the large roll screen is electric and looks like a hotel,” then we are on the right track.

I decided to use carbonized 7mm vertically laminated bamboo as a key material to create a single world view. The result is a unique texture that has a rustic yet luxurious feel to it.
Except for some furniture parts and flooring, laminated bamboo is used as the interior material. It is a material that I have been continuously researching and using, which is simple yet gives a new sense of luxury.
The flooring and the walls of the building frame are made of white oak to emphasize the contrast with the laminated bamboo wood and give a sense of space.

The first floor is used as the living and dining room and the water area.
A mini-bar and wine cellar next to the built-in sofa and a wooden frame window in front of the existing sash window harmonize the interior design.
If you put on the music of “Art Blakey” while looking at the night view, it becomes a superb lounge bar, where you can invite your friends for a party.

The kitchen and living areas can be separated by sliding doors made of 5mm flat bars and bamboo louvers, creating a sense of continuity within the narrow space.
The storage space was designed to be integrated with the wall surface not to stand out. The back of the kitchen is also a storage area with built-in functions, including a trash can.

The second floor is a private space with a bedroom and a tatami mat room for the children.
The long and narrow staircase space is made to feel more spacious than it is by taking advantage of the mirror’s reflection, which also serves as a full-length mirror.
Since the ceiling height of the second floor is lower than that of the first floor, the ceiling is painted directly on the building frame, and the floor is herringbone flooring with a width of 50mm, which gives the floor texture.
The children’s bedroom is a tatami mat room with wall storage and study space. In addition, shoji paper screens are used to partition the room to secure the lighting.

This 47m² house, with the maximum amount of storage in the minimum space and multiple design languages, is made up of an accumulation of various elements.
