チューリッヒのまちに佇む「石とガラスの彫刻」

スイス・チューリッヒに位置する〈ハウス・ツム・ファルケン（Haus zum Falken）〉は、石とガラスによる彫刻的な壁面が特徴的な、4層の賃貸フロアからなる建物です。

スペインを代表する建築家であり、構造エンジニアでもあるサンティアゴ・カラトラバ（Santiago Calatrava）が設計しました。

注目ポイント

• 〈シュタデルホーフェン駅〉（1990年）の隣接地という、約35年の時を経たカラトラバによる介入
• 広場の創出や地下自転車ステーションの整備など、都市にも貢献するプロジェクト

都市デザイン

広場のネットワーク：〈シュタデルホーフェン駅〉に生まれる新たな都市の質

歴史的な中央駅舎を有する〈シュタデルホーフェン駅〉は、堂々たる樹木と優雅な噴水によって特徴づけられるシュタデルホーファー広場の中核を担っている。この広場は、チューリッヒ湖からゼクセルラウテン広場、オペラハウスを経てシュタデルホーファー広場へと至り、駅で完結する公共空間ネットワークの一部をなすものである。〈ハウス・ツム・ファルケン〉は現在その東端に位置し、西側のオリヴェンバウム・ビルと共に中央駅舎を挟み込むように配置されている。

ファルケンシュテッグ広場：階段橋の足元に誕生した新たな公共空間

建物の前面において、既存の建築線からセットバックさせた1階部分が、人々を迎え入れる公共広場を創出している。中央駅舎と〈ハウス・ツム・ファルケン〉の間に位置する「ファルケンシュテッグ階段橋」は、この広場の中心的要素である。これにより、駅と周辺地域を行き交う歩行者の動線は、開放的かつゆとりある、流動的なものとなった。

クロイツビュール通り：通りにおける独自の存在感

クロイツビュール通り沿いでは、〈ハウス・ツム・ファルケン〉の東端に設けられた緑の前庭が、都市的に重要な意味をもつ空間を形成している。そこには、駅のパーゴラ、ハウス・ホーエンビュール、ファルケンブルク、そしてハウス・ツム・ファルケンに縁取られ、グロスミュンスター大聖堂の塔へと抜ける視覚的な軸線が開かれている。後退したファサードが新たな視線を生み出し、周辺街路の空間体験をより豊かなものにしているのである。

自転車ステーション：800台超の駐輪スペース

専用の自転車駐輪施設を整備するというチューリッヒ市のイニシアチブは、都市環境の文脈において極めて重要な意義をもつ。〈ハウス・ツム・ファルケン〉内に800台分の地下駐輪スペースを導入したことで、シュタデルホーファー広場から屋外駐輪が一掃された。限られた敷地と高い地下水位という条件下での3層にわたる地下ステーション建設は、大きな挑戦であった。完全に機能するこの施設はすでに市へと引き渡され、800台以上の自転車を受け入れる体制が整っている。

建築

唯一無二の存在：都市における芸術的出来事

ここにある建築は単なる機能を超え、都市における「芸術的な出来事」として存在する。ガラスのファサードは、プロファイル（枠材）とガラスの垂直的なリズムによって、蛇行するような構成を描き出す。分節されたコーニス、折り目、そして織り込まれた面が移ろう反射を生み出し、建物に際立って優美な存在感を与えている。

賃貸スペース：自然光が溢れる空間

上層の4フロアは、ファサードのグリッドにより、あらゆるテナントレイアウトに対応可能な、明るく無柱の空間となっている。そこからは高架遊歩道やシュタデルホーファー広場、さらにその先の都市景観へと広がる眺望が開ける一方、密な構造スパンが室内に親密な感覚をもたらす。

また、本建物は最高水準の環境基準を満たしている。LEEDゴールド認証の取得に加え、Minergie-P（スイスの省エネ基準）を上回る性能を誇り、緑化屋根に設置された太陽光パネルによる発電も行う。地下部分は完全に免振構造となっており、強化されたファサードの遮音性能により、電車や路面電車の騒音はほとんど感知できないレベルである。

内部動線：建物内に浮かぶ彫刻

メインの階段は、建物内における空間的なイベントとなる。4層吹抜けのアトリウムと、そこをうねるように昇る階段が光に満ちた「内部彫刻」を形成し、全階層を結びつけるダイナミックな中心軸となっている。

基壇部：石とガラスによる彫刻的構成

建物は堅固な石造の基壇部から立ち上がり、上方へ伸びる彫刻的な壁面へと移行する。繊細な石のディテールがガラスファサードの下縁へと延び、大地に根ざした基壇と上部のガラス躯体との間に対話を生み出している。

この石の基壇は、チューリッヒ・バーンホフ通りの洗練された1階部分を想起させるものであり、ファサードが単なる表層ではなく、実体を伴っていた時代へのオマージュでもある。メインエントランスは高く細身の石柱に縁取られ、建物に入るという行為に威厳と儀式的な感覚を添えている。

ホワイエ：都市の一部としての内部空間

2層吹抜けのホワイエでは、内部と外部が交錯する。来訪者は、北側の緑豊かな高架遊歩道と周囲のゼーフェルト地区の建物に囲まれ、都市の文脈に没入する感覚を覚えるだろう。通行人にとって、このホワイエはその内部空間をショーケースのように見せる、明るく歓迎的な空間として佇む。ファサードのリズムは内部にも連続し、光沢のある木材ときらめく金色のスラットで構成された立体的なレリーフとして、ホワイエ空間に反響している。

Urban Design

A NETWORK OF SQUARES – A New Urban Quality at the Stadelhofen Station

Stadelhofen Station, with its historic Main Station Building, anchors Stadelhofer Platz — a square defined by its majestic trees and elegant fountain. The square is part of a network of public spaces stretching from Zurich Lake, across Sechseläutenplatz and the Opera House, to Stadelhofer Platz, where it culminates at the station. The Haus zum Falken now flanks the east end, framing the Main Station Building together with the Olivenbaum building to the west.

FALKENSTEG SQUARE – A New Public Square at the Falkensteg Stair Bridge

A recessed ground floor, set back from the original building line, creates a welcoming public square at the front of the building. The Falkensteg Stair Bridge is the central element of this square, between the Main Station Building and the Haus zum Falken. Pedestrian flows between the station and neighborhood are now open, generous, and fluid.

KREUZBÜHLSTRASSE – A Unique Presence on Kreuzbühlstrasse

Along Kreuzbühlstrasse street, a green forecourt creates a moment of urban significance at the east end of the Haus zum Falken. It opens a visual axis to the Grossmünster towers, framed by the station’s pergola, Haus Hohenbühl, Falkenburg, and Haus zum Falken. The recessed façade introduces new sightlines, enriching the spatial experience of the surrounding streets.

BICYCLE STATION – Parking for Over 800 Bicycles

The City of Zurich’s initiative to create a dedicated bicycle parking facility has been of great importance for the urban context. By introducing 800 underground bike spaces within Haus zum Falken, Stadelhofer Platz is now free from open-air bike parking. Constructing a three-level underground station was a major challenge due to limited space and high groundwater. The fully functional facility has now been handed over to the city, ready to accommodate over 800 bicycles.

The Building

ONE OF A KIND – An Artistic Event in the City

Architecture here is more than functional — it is an artistic event in the city. The glass façade forms a meandering composition through the vertical rhythm of profiles and glass. Its articulated cornice, folds and interwoven planes create shifting reflections, giving the building a strikingly graceful presence.

RENTAL SPACES – A building flooded with natural light

The four upper floors offer bright, column-free spaces, adaptable to any tenant layout, thanks to the façade grid. Expansive views open onto the elevated promenade, the Stadelhoferplatz, and the city beyond, while the tight structural interval provides interior intimacy. The building meets the highest environmental standards: achieving LEED Gold certification, exceeding Minergie-P benchmarks, and generating electricity via the photovoltaic panels on the green roof. The basement is fully vibration-isolated, and the enhanced façade acoustics make train and tram traffic virtually imperceptible.

INTERIOR CIRCULATION – A Sculpture Within the Building

The main staircase becomes a spatial event within the building. A four-story atrium, with the sinuous flight of stair, forms a light-filled interior sculpture — a dynamic centerpiece that connects all levels.

BUILDING PLINTH – A Sculptural Composition of Stone and Glass

The building rises from a solid stone plinth, into sculpted walls stretching upwards. Subtle stone details extend toward the lower edges of the glass façade, establishing a dialogue between the grounded plinth and the glass body above. The stone plinth recalls the refined ground floors of Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse — a nod to a time when façades embodied substance, not just display. The main entrances are framed by tall, slender stone pillars, that lend a sense of dignity and ceremony to the act of entering.

FOYER – An Interior Space as Part of the City

In the double-height foyer, interior meets exterior. Visitors find themselves immersed in the urban context, between the lush, elevated promenade to the north and the surrounding Seefeld buildings. For passersby, the foyer stands as a luminous, welcoming space showcasing its centerpiece. The rhythm of the façade continues inside, echoed in the three-dimensional relief of the foyer, composed of glossy wood and shimmering gold slats.
