良質な地下水が自噴する井戸も数多く、水の都と呼ばれるその街に計画した「水庭と中庭をもつ住宅」である。
敷地は商業地域にあり、南北で特性の違う2つの道路に挟まれた敷地にある。南面の道路はヒューマンスケールな建物が連なる町並みで、車通りも非常に少ない閑静な道路に面している。その反面、北側の道路は地元の方々の抜け道として機能し、車通りが多く騒々しさがある。敷地東側には境界際まで4階建てビルが立っているため、居心地の良さをつくり出す仕掛けとして、中庭を建物の中心に据えたロの字型のシンプルな建築形状とした。
採光、通風、各部屋からの視線の抜けを付加する中庭空間は、騒々しい北側の道路から中庭空間を経て空間を繋げていくことで、南側の穏やか空気感へ馴染ませることを意図している。街に馴染めるように軒先の高さを抑え、街行く人の目当たりの良さを大事にプロポーションにこだわった。
シンメトリーな切妻屋根の形状は、昔からその場所にあったような力強さが生まれたように思う。
解体前の平屋の住宅には、つくり込んだ和風の庭と大きな池が南側に広がっていたことがとても印象的で、この地域特性として水を活かした設計を念頭に、南庭に水庭のある計画を進めてきた。
ラワンと漆喰を基調としたインテリアは、素朴で簡素ながら、どこか懐かしい雰囲気。丁寧な納まりとすることで、近代的な印象に仕上がっている。
性能を担保しながらも、外部空間から得られる情緒性も大切にして、丁寧に設計をしてきた。
鎖樋を通じて雨が、水庭に流れるさま。
水盤の反射光が、天井面にゆらぎ、動きを生み出している。

This is a “Residence with a Water Garden and Courtyard” designed for a city known as the “City of Water,” which boasts numerous wells that yield high-quality groundwater.
The site is located in a commercial district, sandwiched between two roads with distinct characteristics running north-south. The road on the south side features a streetscape lined with human-scale buildings and is a quiet street with very little traffic. In contrast, the road on the north side serves as a shortcut for residents, resulting in heavy traffic and noise. Since a four-story building stands right up to the property line on the east side, the design adopts a simple L-shaped form, with the courtyard at the center to create a sense of comfort.
The courtyard space, which provides natural light, ventilation, and unobstructed views from each room, is intended to connect the space from the noisy north-side road through the courtyard, thereby blending it into the serene atmosphere of the south side. To ensure the building blends into the neighborhood, the eave height was kept low, and great care was taken with the proportions to ensure the building is visually appealing to passersby.
I feel that the symmetrical gable roof shape lends the building a sense of strength, as if it had always stood there.
The single-story house that stood on this site before demolition featured a meticulously crafted Japanese-style garden and a large pond extending to the south—a truly striking feature. Keeping in mind the region’s characteristic use of water, we proceeded with a plan that incorporates a water garden in the south courtyard.
The interior, featuring teak and plaster as its main elements, has a rustic, simple yet nostalgic atmosphere. Careful attention to detail in the construction gives it a modern finish.
We designed the space with great care, ensuring performance while also valuing the emotional appeal derived from the outdoor spaces.
Rainwater flows through the chain gutter into the water garden.
The light reflecting off the water’s surface ripples across the ceiling, creating a sense of movement.
