〈TIHANY〉は、藁に包まれた、まるで浮かび上がるような片持ち梁の家形ボリュームが特徴的なハンガリーのティハニに建つ別荘です。

下層である石張りの基壇部、機能的なアメニティを集めた小さなボリュームの中間層、テラスの上に伸びる茅葺き屋根の上層という3層で構成されており、効率的で再生可能な素材という現代的な特性にもかかわらずあまり見かけない茅葺き屋根を現代的な表現で使用しています。

ヴァナキュラーな遺産の復活：ティハニの伝統集落を再解釈した現代的な住宅

RAPA Architectsはハンガリーの村であるティハニにて、伝統的なデザイン手法に挑戦するユニークな建築プロジェクトを設計した。

そのコンセプトは、感傷的な表現やバーナキュラー建築、地域主義建築の原則に従うことを避けつつ、茅葺き屋根と伝統的な「ロングハウス」の輪郭をもつ現代的な別荘をデザインすることにある。

RAPA Architectsの創設者である建築家アダム・ライス（Adam Reisz）は、ティハニの深い建築的背景からインスピレーションを得た。

人間と自然の新しい関係を思い描くことに情熱を燃やすクライアントのために設計されたこの新しい別荘は、大胆で革新的なデザインアプローチを示し、片持ち梁のボリュームや象徴的なイメージなどの要素を取り入れ、ユニークな建築表現と建築的なイメージの変換を探求している。

再生可能という現代的な性能を備えた藁で生み出す現代的な表現

藁で覆われた浮遊構造物のような印象的な外観は、非現実的で興味をそそる視覚体験を生み出している。

以前、モダニズムの家族住宅を依頼したクライアントは、この湖畔の隠れ家にはよりソフトでナチュラル、そしてロマンチックな雰囲気を求め、建築家はティハニの別荘によく見られるモダニズム的なフラットルーフから離れることができた。

デザインコンセプトは、バラトン湖周辺に見られる別荘の3つの典型的なスタイルをつなぐ、3層のアプローチに基づいている。

下層である基壇部は、1960年代のバラトン建築を彷彿とさせるシンプルなグレーの石張りとなっており、各客室から庭に直接アクセスできることが特徴である。中間層は、淡いグレーのファサードをもつ小さな機能的なボリュームで構成され、テラスへの出口として機能し、1階のトイレや浮遊する上層階へと続く階段などのアメニティを備えている。

上層である茅葺き屋根の細長い「ロングハウス」はテラスの上に延び、下層との間のドラマチックな切れ間を見せるとともに、大きな開口部からは湖のパノラマを眺めることができる。

この2階建ての建物は、茅葺きの職人技に敬意を表し、葦の建築に関連する最高レベルの技術と職人技を披露している。

この住宅は、効率的で再生可能な素材という現代的な特性にもかかわらず、現代建築における茅葺き屋根材の使用が珍しいことを示す完璧な例である。このプロジェクトでは、屋根、ファサード、台座を解体することで、古いものと現代的なものの関係を創造的かつ詩的に探求している。

Reviving Vernacular Heritage: A Contemporary Dwelling Reinterprets Tihany’s Traditional Settlements

RAPA Architects has designed a unique architectural project located in Tihany, Hungary, which challenges traditional design norms. The concept revolves around designing a contemporary vacation home with a thatched roof and a traditional longhouse contour, while avoiding sentimentalism or blindly following vernacular or critical regionalist architectural principles.

The architect, Adam Reisz – founder of Reisz and Partners Architects -, drew inspiration from the deep architectural context of Tihany.

The residence has been designed for a client who is passionate by envisioning a new relationship between man and nature. This new vacation home exhibits bold and innovative design approaches, incorporating elements like cantilevered volumes and iconic imagery, exploring its unique architectural expressions and the transformation of architectural images.

The vacation home’s striking appearance, resembling a floating structure with straw cladding by creating a surreal and intriguing visual experience. The client, who previously commissioned a modernist family home, expressed a desire for a softer, natural, and romantic atmosphere for their lakeside retreat, allowing the architects to depart from the flat-roofed modernism typically associated with Tihany’s vacation homes.

The design concept is based on a three-layered approach, connecting three archetypal styles of vacation homes found around Lake Balaton.

The lower layer features a simple, gray stone-clad base reminiscent of 1960s Balaton architecture, characterized by direct access to the garden from each guest room.

The middle layer comprises a small functional volume with a pale gray façade, serving as an exit to the terrace and housing amenities like a ground-floor restroom and the staircase leading to the floating upper level.

The third layer represents the pinnacle of the composition—an elongated “longhouse” with a thatched roof extending over the terrace, showcasing a dramatic break and providing panoramic views of the lake through extensive glass openings. This two-story structure pays homage to the craftsmanship of thatching, showcasing the highest level of skill and craftsmanship associated with reed construction.

The house is a perfect example of thatched roofing material usage in contemporary architecture is uncommon, despite its modern attributes as an efficient and renewable material. In this project, the deconstruction of roof, facade, and plinth showcases the creative and poetic exploration of the relationship between the old, the ancient, and the modern.

It symbolizes a process of learning from time, with intersecting lines and overlapping layers, culminating in sculptural purity.
