バーレーンの海洋文化の歴史を魅せるパビリオン

開催まであと310日に迫った、2025年4月13日より大阪で開催される日本国際博覧会（2025年大阪・関西万博）に向け、〈バーレーンパビリオン〉のデザインが発表されました。世界的な海洋交通の要衝であるバーレーン王国の地理と歴史を参照したパビリオンであり、バーレーンの造船技術と日本の木工芸技術を再解釈したデザインとなっています。

レバノン出身の建築家リナ・ゴットメ（Lina Ghotmeh）による、パリを拠点とするスタジオ リナ・ゴットメ ー アーキテクチャ（Lina Ghotmeh – Architecture）が設計しました。

バーレーン王国は、2025年大阪・関西万博への出展を発表した。2010年の上海万博、2015年のミラノ万博、2020年のドバイ万博に続き、4回目の万博参加となる。

バーレーンの参加は、ディルムン文明以来、世界との主要な連絡手段として機能してきたバーレーンという国のユニークかつ歴史的な海洋文化を強調するものである。パビリオンは、湾岸への玄関口という地理と、主要貿易港としての歴史を紹介し、世界に対する卓越した開放性、文化の多様性、革新性で知られるバーレーンの地域社会を形成する。

バーレーン文化・古代遺産庁長官であり、2025年大阪・関西万博〈バーレーンパビリオン〉の総責任者であるシャイフ・ハリーファ・ビン・アフメッド・ビン・アブドゥッラー・アル・ハリーファ（Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa）は次のように語る。

「万博への参加は極めて重要であり、バーレーンの多様な能力、豊かな文化遺産、そして世界的な課題の多くに対処できる革新的な解決策を示すためのユニークなプラットフォームを提供する。さらに、〈バーレーンパビリオン〉を通じて、湾岸地域の歴史的な海上交通の要衝というユニークな地理的位置にスポットライトを当てるつもりである。」

バーレーンの造船技術と日本の木工芸技術を再解釈したパビリオン

大阪万博は2025年4月13日から10月13日まで、大阪・関西地域で開催され、「いのちを救う」「いのちに力を与える」「いのちをつなぐ」の3つのサブテーマを掲げている。主催者は約2,800万人以上の来場者と、約150カ国からの出展を見込んでいる。万博ではさまざまなイベントが開催され、人類の向上のために人々がつながり、知識を交換する機会が提供される。

〈バーレーンパビリオン〉は、レバノン出身の建築家リナ・ゴットメによる、パリを拠点とするリナ・ゴットメ ー アーキテクチャとともに設計したものであり、サブテーマの1つである、海に面した「いのちに力を与える」エリアに位置する。

デザインはバーレーンの伝統的なダウ船（Dhow）から着想を得ており、バーレーンの豊かな職人技と製造の伝統を紹介する1000年来の船建造技術を、日本の木工芸とともに再解釈している。

リナ・ゴットメはパビリオンについて、「パビリオンの形状は、かつて東アラビアや東アフリカの海岸を航海していた船を彷彿とさせ、海を愛するバーレーンの魅惑的な物語を紡ぎ出す。」と語っている。

木造の構造とアルミニウムの外壁で構成されたこのパビリオンは、万博終了後は完全にリサイクルすることができ、これは持続可能性を推進するバーレーンのビジョンに沿うものである。

このパビリオンは、海に近いことを利用して冷房と換気を行い、古くから伝わる冷房方法を現代的に再解釈しており、持続可能性を重視し機械的な冷房方法の必要性を減らしている。

インテリアデザインと展示はバーレーンのデザインスタジオ Shepherd Studioが担当する。リナ・ゴットメはアーティスティック・ディレクションを担当し、バーレーンの豊かな海洋資源、物流資源、自然資源にスポットを当てた没入体験を来場者に提供する。

さらに、パビリオンにはバーレーンが万博へ参加したことによる、世界中から訪れる来場者に向けて将来を見据えた経済、投資、ビジネスの目的地としてのバーレーンの地域的・世界的競争力をアピールするための専用ビジネス・スペースを設ける。

Bahrain Announces its participation in Osaka Expo 2025

The Kingdom of Bahrain unveils its National Pavilion at The Expo Osaka 2025, marking the Kingdom’s fourth participation at the Expo, following its participation in Expo Shanghai 2010, Expo Milan 2015, and Expo Dubai 2020.
Bahrain’s participation will highlight its unique and historical maritime heritage, that has served as the primary means of communication with the world since the Dilmun Civilization. The pavilion will showcase Bahrain’s strategic geographic location as the gateway to the Gulf and its history as a major port of trade, shaping a local society known for its exceptional openness to the world, its cultural diversity and its innovation.
In a statement, His Excellency Shaikh Khalifa bin Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, the President of the Bahrain Authority for Culture and Antiquities, and the General Commissioner of Bahrain’s National Pavilion at Expo Osaka 2025 said: “In the midst of today’s rapidly evolving world, our collaborative efforts are aimed at establishing the Kingdom of Bahrain as a frontrunner in the realms of innovation, creativity, and sustainability. Our participation in the World Expo is pivotal, as it presents a unique platform for us to demonstrate our diverse capabilities, rich cultural heritage, and innovative solutions that could address many of the global challenges”. He further emphasized that through its pavilion, Bahrain intends to spotlight its unique geographical location as a historical maritime crossroads in the Gulf Region. This geographical advantage has been instrumental in shaping Bahrain’s rich culture, ancient civilization, and distinct economic strengths. His Excellency also noted the significant synergy between various sectors in Bahrain – both public and private – working in harmony to represent the Kingdom in the most exemplary manner. Additionally, he underscored the crucial role of Expo Osaka as a platform for worldwide communication and collaboration, ultimately serving the greater good of humanity.
The Expo will take place in the Osaka-Kansai region of Japan from April 13 to October 13, 2025, under the theme “Designing Future Society for our Lives”. The three sub-themes are “Saving Lives”, “Empowering Lives”, and “Connecting Lives”. Organizers expect over 28 million visitors to explore contributions from around 150 countries. The Expo will feature various events, providing opportunities for people to connect and exchange knowledge for the betterment of humanity.
The Bahrain Pavilion is designed by the Lebanese French architect Lina Ghotmeh with her Paris based studio Lina Ghotmeh – Architecture and is located in the ” Empowering Lives” area facing the sea. The design draws inspiration from traditional Bahraini dhow boats, reinterpreting millennial boat building techniques that showcase Bahrain’s rich craftsmanship and manufacturing heritage, alongside Japanese wood artistry- in a celebration of the bilateral relations between both countries. Lina Ghotmeh shares that “the pavilion’s shape reminisces the vessels that once navigated the coasts of Eastern Arabia and East Africa, weaving enchanting tales of a seafaring Bahraini nation”
The pavilion will be constructed out of wood, with an outer structure made of aluminum, aligning with Bahrain’s vision to promote sustainability, and will be fully recycled after the Expo.
It utilizes its proximity to the sea for cooling and ventilation, in a contemporary reinterpretation of ancestral cooling methods. With an emphasis on sustainability, the pavilion reduces the need for any mechanical cooling methods.
The interior design and exhibition will be led by the Bahraini design studio Shepherd Studio, with the Artistic direction of Lina Ghotmeh offering an immersive experience for visitors highlighting Bahrain’s rich maritime, logistical and natural resources. Additionally, Bahrain’s participation in the Expo will include a dedicated business space to promote Bahrain’s competitiveness regionally and globally as a forward-looking economy, investment, and business destination for visitors from all over the world.
