敷地は、緩やかな南向き斜面地が宅地開発され、戸建て住宅が密集して建ち並ぶエリアである。
施主からの要望は、「明るい家と庭」「小さな子供たちが庭で遊べる家」「ローコスト」という、ごくありふれたものだった。しかしながら、周辺の住宅を改めて見渡してみると、おそらくは同じような要望で建てられたに違いないと思われるが、北側に駐車場を並べ、小さい開口（窓）によって閉ざされた街並みを形成している。また、建物が敷地いっぱいに建てられているため、家の前から見上げたときの空は、傾斜地にも関わらずとても小さかった。
そこで我々は、敷地の西側に建物を寄せ、空いた東側に駐車スペースを兼ねたニワを設けた。そして、ニワに面して大きな開口を設けた。このニワは、光と風、そして緑の景色をこの家に保証するものであり、同時に周辺の家々、さらには街に対しても保証してくれる。いわば都市の余白（ヴォイド）として。
南側の土地は空いていたが、いずれは敷地いっぱいに別の家が建つことが予想されたため、この面の1階は閉じて壁を立て、代わりに2階に窓を開けて、空に向かって大きく開いた形状とした。窓は敷地の奥にいくほど大きくなり、全面道路からのプライバシー確保と、室内の開放感とを両立させている。
空間のつくりはいたってシンプルだが、2階の床レベルに変化をつけており、その階段の隙間から風が抜け、採光もいきわたるようにしている。さらには、斜面地であるこの街の特徴を、内部空間へと持ち込んだ。
この家はウチにもニワにも光と風が満ち、広い空も取り戻した。明るいニワと前面道路は、子供たちの格好の遊び場となっている。（虎尾亮太＋謝 欣芸）
A house with void space to the city that brings light and wind inside and garden
This project is in a dense residential development area on a gentle slope.
As a request from the owner, “a bright house with a garden,” “a house where the children can play in the garden,” “a low-cost house” seems very familiar to what everybody wants. But when looking at the surrounding houses, despite the probability of being built with a similar request, they create a closed townscape with aligning parking lots on the north side and small openings. Even on the sloped road, the crammed houses cover the sky.
Therefore, we afforded a garden space that also served as a parking space on the east side of the property and made a large entrance facing it.
This garden acts as a void that introduces light and wind and greenery to not only the house but also the city. The land on the south side is now vacant, though a neighboring house is expected to be built soon, we did not create an opening on the first floor. Instead, the second floor is wide open toward the sky. By making the windows larger heading towards the back of the premises, both privacy and openness are compatible.
Although the design of the house is simple, the floor levels are divided and vertically shifted. It creates ventilation and daylight seep through the house. It also represents the sloped character of the area and is introducing it to the lifestyle of the house.
