兼六園近く、横山町にはかつて加賀八家の年寄横山家上屋敷があり、正門前の大きな広見が今でもその痕跡を残している。敷地はその広見の近く、閑静な住宅地の細長い土地で、庭と仕事部屋のある家を建てたいという施主の要望を受け、スタディを進めた。スタディでは庭の配置が難航し、いっそのこと室内に庭の要素を取り入れることで案はまとまった。
細長い敷地では、光の取り入れ方が重要な要素となる。インナーガーデンに面し大きく取った南窓から光を取り入れ、さらに3枚の屋根の高さをずらして配置し、その隙間から東からの光も取り入れることで室内の明るさを確保した。3枚の屋根はエントランスから順に高くなっていき、低く抑えられた暗い色合いのチーク板張りの質感のある天井から、リビングダイニングのやや明るく高いラワンの天井へと切り替わり、さらに高いインナーガーデンと2階のある明るいシナの天井へと移り変わっていく。
インナーガーデン南側の壁には大きく開口をあけ、十分な光がシマトネリコを照らしている。インナーガーデン奥には仕事部屋、水回り、2階部分に寝室など個室を配置し、3枚の屋根が、パブリックからプライベート感のある落ち着きのある空間の質も切り替えていく。
伝統的街並み区域になるこの地区では外壁の色は指定され、一番低い屋根で構成されたエントランスは落ち着きのある印象を受ける。そのまま玄関を開けると、印象ががらりとかわり、目に入った一番奥のシマトネリコと天井の高いリビングに引き込まれる。施主の集めた観葉植物も加わり、緑あふれる空間は、天井の高さも相まって静かながらも屋外にいるような心地よさが味わえる。
コロナ後の住宅ではテレワークと自宅で過ごす時間の充実が1つのテーマとなるが、そのいい回答となるであろう。（村梶招子＋村梶直人）
A house with a courtyard that captures light from a staggered roof
In Yokoyama-cho, near Kenrokuen Garden, there used to be the Yokoyama family’s upper residence, where a large space in front of the main gate still remains. In response to the client’s request to build a house with a garden and a workroom, we conducted a study on the site, which is a long and narrow piece of land in a quiet residential area near the garden. During the study, the garden’s layout proved to be difficult, so we decided to incorporate elements of the garden into the interior.
In a long and narrow site, the way to bring in light is an essential factor. A large south window facing the inner garden lets in light, and the three roofs are placed at different heights to let in light from the east through the gaps between them, thus securing the brightness of the interior. The three roofs rise in sequence from the entrance, from the low, dark teak textured ceiling, to the slightly brighter and higher lauan ceiling in the living and dining rooms, and then to the higher inner garden and the brighter cinnabar ceiling on the second floor.
A large opening in the south wall of the inner garden allows ample light to illuminate the striped ash trees. The three roofs also switch the quality of the space from public to private and calm.
As this is a traditional district, the color of the exterior walls is specified, and the entrance with the lowest roof gives a calm impression. However, when you open the front door, the impression changes drastically, and you are drawn into the living room with its high ceiling and the striped ash tree at the far end. With the addition of the owner’s collection of ornamental plants, the space is filled with greenery, and the high ceilings provide a quiet yet comfortable feeling of being outdoors.
This is a good answer to one of the themes of post-Corona housing, which is teleworking and spending more time at home. (Shoko Murakaji + Naoto Murakaji)
