〈南荻窪の家〉の敷地はもともと南側の隣地と一体の土地で、古い日本家屋が建っていた。建主に住んでいたころの話を聞くと、周辺は昔から大きめの区画で庭と緑があるほどよい密度の街並みであり、多少なり元の姿形を変えていても現在に継承されていることが分かった。そのような場所性から、ひと間で続くかのような、ゆったりとした空間を簡素な屋根と矩形で包むことにした。
敷地の高低差を活かし、高い部分の中心に家族が集う場を据え置き、低い部分に半地下を設け、その上階に屋根裏のような空間をつくっている。用途や位置でボリュームの差をつくり、個々の室に見合う光を採り入れ、高低差を結ぶ小さい階段部が緩衝帯となり、適度に距離を取りながらも集う場と個の場の連続性を確立した。
将来像を見据え、まだ小さい子どもたちの場所は間仕切りを設けず、自由に使えるようにし、今後個室化させたりまた取り外したりと、その連続性に変化をつけることができるようにもしている。(石川素樹、著書『ELEMENTS 5つの建築 5つの断章』より)
Large-roofed houses that become part of the cityscape
House in Minamiogikubo’s site was initially a piece of land with an adjacent lot to the south, where an old Japanese house stood. When I talked to the owner about the time when he lived there, I found out that the surrounding area had always been a large plot of land with a good density of gardens and greenery and that it has been inherited to this day with some changes to its original form. Because of this location, we decided to wrap a spacious rectangular space with a simple roof, as if it were a continuous space.
Taking advantage of the difference in elevation of the site, the family gathering place is placed in the center of the high part of the building, and a semi-basement is created in the lower part, with an attic-like space on the upper floor. The small staircase connecting the difference in elevation serves as a buffer zone, establishing continuity between the gathering and individual spaces while maintaining a moderate distance.
With an eye on the future, the children’s rooms are not partitioned and can be used freely, but the continuity can be changed by making them private or removing them. (Motoki Ishikawa)
