敷地は南北に長く、南側接道で東西北側はかなり隣戸が近接した状況であった。建蔽率から一定の空地と、要望される床面積などからほぼ総2階とする必要があったが、限られた庭をどこに確保するのかが難しい。熟考の末、内部各所での採光通風や眺望と、プライバシー確保の両立を果たすべく、思い切って真ん中に庭を設けることにした。ただしその案の場合、中庭自体が暗く空気が淀むような場所にはさせないことが重要なミッションとなる。
その解決策として、1つは2台分のガレージを密閉するのではなく、屋根はあるものの中庭とは格子を介して繋がる関係とした。風が抜けるのはもちろんのこと、適度に見え隠れする関係、特に夜間の外部照明の美しさなどを考慮してのアイデアである。もう1つは、中庭の北側よりも南側の棟は高さを抑えること。より多くの自然光を中庭へ誘い、白壁の反射も含めて囲われながらも明るさを抱く空間とする企てだ。その際、南北をつなぐ2階の床はロボット掃除機の使用も考慮し、スロープを採用したのもこの計画の特徴である。
さらにこの住宅の特徴をもう1つ挙げるとすれば、吊り階段だろうか。当事務所としても初めてで、設計、施工とも非常に手こずったが、何とかイメージ通りのものが完成したと思う。（遠藤 誠）
A house that is surrounded but has brightness
The site is long from north to south, and the road on the south side is tangential to the neighboring houses on the east, west, and north sides. Due to the building-to-land ratio, it was necessary to have a certain amount of vacant land and a full two-story due to the requested floor area, but it was difficult to find a place to secure the limited garden. After much deliberation, we decided to create a garden in the middle of the building to provide both light, ventilation, and views from various places inside the building and secure privacy. However, it was important not to let the courtyard become a dark and stagnant place.
As a solution to this problem, we decided not to enclose the two-car garage but to connect it to the courtyard through a lattice, even though it has a roof. The idea was not only to allow the wind to pass through but also to create a moderately visible and hidden relationship, especially for the beauty of the exterior lighting at night. The other idea was to reduce the height of the southern height of the courtyard rather than the northern one. The idea is to invite more natural light into the courtyard and create a space that embraces brightness even though it is enclosed, including the reflection of the white walls. Another feature of this project is that the second floor, which connects the north and south sides of the house, is designed as a slope (considering the use of robot vacuum cleaners).
Another feature of this house is the suspended staircase. It was the first time for our office to work on this project, and it took a lot of time to design and construct it, but I think we managed to complete it as we had imagined. (Makoto Endo)
