アイウエアブランドJINSの前橋のロードサイド店舗の設計である。従来の多くのJINSショップのように駅前、街中にある都心型ではなく、地域に密着した郊外型の店舗として新しいコンセプトが求められた。若い世代も多く暮らす住宅地が近接することから、子供と親世代を中心にお年寄りまで誰でも立ち寄れ滞在できる公園のような場所をつくりたいと考えた。そこでメガネの販売だけでなくメガネをつくっている間に休めたり、日常的に訪れる目的となるような空間やコンテンツを提案した。JINSにプロジェクトチームが立ち上がり、コンテンツについて双方で検討と議論を重ね、最終的にJINSが自社で運営する新しいベーカリーカフェ「エブリパン」が生まれ、併設されることとなった。
ロードサイド店舗の多くは1階に最も価値があり、2階が有効に使われている事例が少ない。今回、子供も安心して遊べる広場「うえひろば」を2階に計画し、歩道から「うえひろば」を立体的に繋ぐ大階段を設けた。従来のロードサイド店舗は道に面して駐車場を広くとるのが典型だが、この立体的な繋がりを切らないために、裏手にある駐車場への通路のみ敷地内に設け、ベーカリー側の外構には並木の歩道から繋がる大きな前庭を設けた。この庭に面した6連のガラス引き戸が開け放たれると、歩道から前庭、店舗、大階段、うえひろばへと続く一連の立体空間＝公園を、気持ちの良い風が視線とともに吹き抜けていく。
沿道を歩くと背景にそびえる赤城山の赤茶色に似た銅板葺の四角い箱が緑豊かな芝生の庭に浮いている。エントランスから入ると店舗全体が水平垂直方向にパースペクティブに広がる。右側がJINS、左側がエブリパン、そして中央が空に抜ける大階段と「うえひろば」である。目の前の扇型に広がる大階段は座席にもなっており、パンとコーヒーを持って自由に座れる。「うえひろば」にも前庭にも席があり、ここを訪れた人は公園のように自分の好きな場所を見つけて過ごすことができる。
また、マルシェやトークイベント、ワークショップなどさまざまな催事に使用できる施設とするため、販売目的以外の空間、大階段やひろばなどを積極的に取り入れたおおらかな計画となっている。
今回、〈JINS PARK〉は郊外型ロードサイド店舗のプロトタイプとして計画した。ここで試されたことがさらに発展し、さまざまな地域に今後展開されることを期待している。（永山祐子）
JINS roadside store where people can chill out like a park
“JINS PARK” is designed for the roadside store in Maebashi for eyewear brand JINS. A new concept was necessary for a suburban local-oriented store, instead of their usual stores in cities generally found in front of stations. Since it is in a residential area popular with young parents, we wanted the store to be similar to a park. Somewhere that every generation, children, parents, and even grandparents, can comfortably stop by. That is why we suggested designs not only for selling glasses but also for people to rest while glasses are assembled and ideas that would give a reason for people to come daily. A new team was launched at JINS. Then, after a series of discussions and careful consideration between us, the idea to have a new adjoining bakery cafe, “EVERYPAN,” was born.
For many roadside stores, ground floors are the most valued space, and it is rarely found that first floors are rarely used effectively. For our project, we planned to build the “UEHIROBA” (upper open area) on the first floor, a playground for kids to play safely. The grand staircase inside the building is connected to the walkway allowing people to access the first floor directly from outside. It is typical for roadside stores to keep plenty of space for a car park, but in order not to block the continuous connection from outside, we only built a path on the site, which leads to the parking area in the back. The exterior of the bakery features a huge front yard connected to the tree-lined street. When you open the six glass sliding doors, you feel a nice breeze coming from the walkway through continuous spaces that we call “the park,” the front yard, bakery, the grand staircase, and the “UEHIROBA.”
When you walk along the walkway, you find a square box floating on the bright green grass with copper roofing in reddish-brown, which resembles the colors of Mt. Akagi looming in the distance. When you walk through the entrance, the space stretches out horizontally and vertically in perspective. There is JINS on your right, “EVERYPAN” to your left, and in the middle of the building, huge stairs going up into the sky to the “UEHIROBA” of the first floor. The stairs are spread out in a fan shape, and with your bread and coffee, you may sit wherever you’d like. There are also seats in the “UEHIROBA” and the front yard where you can find your favorite spot to relax, just like at a park. The Project required flexible zoning as the building was also intended for various events such as markets, speaking events, and workshops. We paid attention to the details of spaces such as the stairs and the plaza that are not generally for selling products.
This project was a prototype for suburban roadside stores. I hope that what we have invented will be developed to serve the interests of many local communities in the future. (Yuko Nagayama)
